Mark Martin had a lot of success in both cross country and track as Most Valuable Runner in 1972-73 for one of MATC's most successful men's teams.
His coach, Fred Williams, shared that Mark won every single race he ran, except two that were poorly marked and he took wrong turns. Mark still holds three school records: the three mile in 15:32, the four-mile in 19:04, and the five-mile in 25:33. "These records have never been close to being challenged," Williams said.
"Mark was an extremely coachable young man, who never missed a training session. He never complained, and knew only one way to run...as hard as he could from beginning to end," Williams stated.
Martin's success drew several offers from NCAA Division I Schools, including the University of Wisconsin, but he preferred not to go for a 4-year degree. He came back to MATC for his second degree in 1984 in Respiratory Therapy, and became the WJCAA Champion in #1 doubles in tennis.
Mark still enjoys competition in tennis, and was a part of a team that won a State Tournament and finished 2nd in sectionals. He now runs purely for enjoyment and to keep in shape for tennis.
Martin earned associate degrees in both the Animal Tech and Respiratory Therapy Programs. He has been a Respiratory Therapist at the Madison Veterans Hospital, starting in 1985.
He and his wife Mary reside in Middleton.
