David Williams was a two-sport star at MATC after excelling in basketball and tennis at Fond du Lac Goodrich High School. David was an All-Conference, All-State and WTCC All-Star basketball player while playing at MATC. He also was the #1 Singles State Champion (WTCC), making for a strong showing in two sports.
In basketball, David was a long range shooter extraordinaire. Coach Jack Brenegan said, "David loved to compete. He never saw a shot he didn't like." However, he did something with those shots, hitting a 52 percent from the floor. David also hit 81 percent from the foul line, while scoring 421 points. He could have easily scored 600 or more points, but there wasn't a three-point line in his day.
Brenegan also remembers David's dedication in the classroom, as he was always plunking away at his court reporting machine while traveling to games. Coach Chris Page, who coached David in tennis said, " I was impressed with the courage of Williams, the athlete, regardless of the difficulty and odds." Page related a story about David when he was in the State Tennis Tournament. Coming up with severe cramps in his legs, but still winning the first set. Page said the cramps were so bad he asked him to forfeit the match, but David refused to quit. Although he was limited in his movement by the pain, David won the match and went on to win the WTCC State title.
David, who volunteered with YMCA youth programs, was an administrator for the Society Insurance Company for many years, and served 5 years as a freelance court reporter. He also coached grade school basketball and soccer. David enjoys outdoor activities with his wife Mary, and three children. He also enjoys hobbies that include stained class art construction and antique restorations.
