From 1988 to 1990 the Madison Area Technical College basketball was led by a 6’0” guard from James Madison High School in Milwaukee. Marcus Lane came to MATC in 1988. In his first year at MATC, Marcus averaged 14.5 points per game and was named co-most valuable player, most improved player, and was a first team WTCC all-conference selection. “Marcus was a super young man and a very coachable athlete. He led by example and worked hard and continued to improve throughout his basketball career,” said Jack Brenegan, Marcus’s coach his first year at MATC. MATC assistant coach, Jerry Lamers remembered, “Marcus was not afraid to do the little things to make the team better. He was a great team player.”

Considered one of the best junior college prospects in the state heading into the 1989-90 season, he met and exceeded expectations. In his second year, Marcus averaged 15.6 points per game, leading MATC not only in scoring, but assists, steals, and rebounding, as well. During that season he received all-conference, all-state, and NJCAA Region XIII honors. Voted MVP for his second consecutive season, Marcus was also honored as 1989-90 Sportsperson of the Year by the MATC District board for his overall efforts as a student-athlete.

After MATC, Marcus attended the University of Wisconsin-River Falls where he was named to the Wisconsin State University Conference all-conference team and was selected as honorable mention NAIA all-american during his 1992 season with the Falcons.

In 1994, Marcus graduated from UW-River Falls with a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education. Since then he has stayed active in the community by volunteer coaching for the Minnesota Kings AAU basketball team and for the River Falls basketball camps. Currently, Marcus is a physical education teacher, athletic director, and boys and girls basketball coach for the Washington Technology Magnet Middle School in St. Paul, Minnesota.
