Andrew Steinhofer put together one of the single greatest seasons of competition in the history of Madison College athletics, regardless of sport. In his lone season with the WolfPack in 2009-2010, the Madison, Wisconsin, native, dominated every course and competitor he saw, and in the process, rewrote the school’s record book that now lists his name 13 times.
Coming off a high school career at Madison La Follette that saw him earn three Big 8 Conference Player of the Year awards and three top-seven finishes at the WIAA State Tournament, as well as win the 2009 Ray Fischer Amateur Championship and very high finishes at the US Junior and Western Junior events, Andrew got right to work for the WolfPack. In his third collegiate tournament, he moved up from sixth place to medalist at the Edgewood College Fall Classic with a then-school-record 36-hole score of 143. His second-round score of 70 would rank as third best in school history and become a familiar number. Following the team’s first tournament win at the MATC-Milwaukee Invitational, Andrew went on to shoot 70 and place second at the Illinois Valley Classic, win the WolfPack Invitational with a 71, place third at the PrairieView Classic, and fourth at the College of DuPage Tournament.
In October 2009, he returned to PrairieView Golf Club for the Region 4 Tournament and signed off on a three-day total of 11-over-par 227 to take Region 4 medalist honors, earning All-Region 4 and All-North Central Community College accolades, as well. The individual title qualified Andrew for the NJCAA Division III Golf Championships in Chautauqua, New York, the following June.
Andrew played exceptional golf in Western New York, posting scores of 73-72-72-70 en route to a four-day total of one-under-par 287. Locked in a back-and-forth battle with Chris Ferraro of SUNY Ulster for the entire final 18 holes, Andrew came up one shot back and earned national runner-up and NJCAA First Team All-American. It was the best individual finish in Madison College golf history at the national tournament.
For his one season at Madison College, Andrew boasts the best season and career scoring average in program history at 74.0. Of his 18 complete rounds, he signed off on eight rounds of par or better, and currently owns the school’s second and third best 36-hole tournament scores of 142 and 143. The 2009-10 team posted a 314.9 scoring average for the season, which ranks 4
th in school history.
"Andrew was an incredibly talented player who proved time and again that he could compete, and beat, the top amateurs and professionals in the state,” stated former golf coach Bill Scheer. “He was the most consistent ball striker and scorer that I had ever coached. His quiet, yet powerful leadership was an inspiration to his teammates, leading the WolfPack to one of its most successful seasons ever."
Andrew had opportunities to continue his golf career at NCAA Division I schools like Iowa, Kentucky, and Ohio State, however, he decided to turn pro instead. He went on to claim Wisconsin PGA Player of the Year in 2011, won the Wisconsin State Open, finished runner-up at the Nebraska Open, and competed on various mini tours. In 2017, Andrew was part of the first group of Madison College student-athletes inducted into the Region 4 Hall of Fame. He currently resides in Madison and works for Nevada Bob’s Golf, all while continuing to fulfill his competitive ambitions, as he did just two years ago by winning the Western Wisconsin Open.
When asked about his time at Madison College, Andrew had the following to say:
- “Always was a great time traveling with coaches and teammates”
- “Love being part of the team”
- “Great environment to be a part of”
