It has been eight years since the Madison College women's volleyball team won their last Region 4 title in 2015, a season that capped a three-peat of region titles at the Division III level. In their first season as a NJCAA Division II program, the WolfPack are eyeing a return to the top, and they'll have the luxury of never leaving home to try and get it done. 2023 NJCAA Region 4 Division II Midwest District B Tournament and will begin postseason play Wednesday, November 1 with a 6:00 p.m. match inside
H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium against #15-seed Bryant & Stratton College. The winner advances to Saturday's semifinal round, followed by Sunday's championship match, and all of it will be conducted on the Pack's home court.
Madison College went 21-9 in the regular season, reaching as high as #8 in the NJCAA Division II Poll in September. Second year head coach
Mallory Stone and company boast an 11-2 record in Redsten Gym, and on the season, are out-hitting the competition by a 10.78 to 8.76 margin in kills per set. Freshman middle blocker and right side hitter
Courtney Gorum has led the offense with 398 kills, a .301 attack percentage, and a 3.94 kills per set average that currently ranks 11th in the nation. The Chesapeake, Virginia, native, and University of Wisconsin transfer is also tied for the team lead with 53.0 blocks, sits second in digs at 213, and ranks third on the team in aces with 30.
Freshman
Addyson McHugh and sophomore
Tyra Anderson are right behind Gorum with 259 and 212 kills, respectively. McHugh has also racked up 208 digs, 22.0 blocks, and 17 aces, while Anderson has added 23 aces and 14.0 blocks.
Second year setter
Daryn Schaefer is averaging 8.14 assists per set and has used her 847 assists this season to move into second on the all-time list at Madison College with 1,737 helpers for the native of Mazomanie, Wisconsin. Freshman
Hope Hesselberg has increased her role as a setter down the stretch of the regular season, boosting her assists per set number to 2.49 as she approaches 200 for the season.
Defensively, the WolfPack have seven players with double-digit blocks on the season, led by Gorum and freshman MB/RS
Amber Horn at 53.0. Sophomore
Gabby Hack is right behind with 45.0 denials. Along the back row, second year libero
Kendall Weisensel has tracked down 348 digs to move her into seventh on the career list with 751.
Weisensel, a product of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, has also led a WolfPack serving unit that has produced 244 aces over 30 matches. Weisensel, who set the school-record for aces in a season as a freshman, recently broke the all-time mark of 127 and currently sits at 139.
The WolfPack went 12-1 against Region 4 competition during the regular season, including a
3-1 win over Bryant & Stratton College (7-17) on September 27. They are 7-1 all-time against the Bobcats with wins in five straight meetings. Wednesday's clash will mark the first postseason get-together for the two in-state foes. Madison College was a combined 5-1 this fall against the other seven teams in the Region 4 Midwest District B Tournament. Madison College is the host site for the
Region 4 Division II Midwest A & B Tournaments.
