CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA - A fast start was not enough Wednesday as #11-seeded Madison College lost 3-1 (19-25, 25-21, 25-15, 25-18) to #6-seeded and two-time defending national champion Cowley College in the second round of the
NJCAA Division II Women's Volleyball Championships. The setback snapped a 16-match win streak as the WolfPack made their fifth all-time appearance at a national tournament, including their first since 2015 and first in Division II.
Trailing 4-2 in the opening set, Madison College used
Ella Vosberg's second kill of the match to trigger a 9-0 run that included three blocks. The Tigers responded with five straight points of their own, and eventually closed the deficit to one at 16-15. Another Vosberg kill and an
Avery Agnew ace bookended a quick three-point burst that was part of a bigger 6-1 surge. Madison led by six, and after a late timeout at 22-19, used a
Rowan Harder kill,
Cora Webster ace, and an attack error by Cowley to win the set one.
Allie Andrews and Vosberg continued the momentun into the second set with two early kills; however, the back-to-back champs produced a 7-0 run to take the lead. Madison answered with an 11-2 stretch with three kills from Vosberg to take a 13-9 lead. The Pack still led 18-14 when the Tigers strung together an 11-3 surge to close out the set and even the match.
Two quick kills by Vosberg helped the WolfPack to a 4-1 lead in the; however, the match momentum turned with a eight-point service run for Cowley that included three aces and the WolfPack being without Andrews for a chunk of the set due to injury. Madison kept it close and trailed 11-9 after Andrews returned and Webster served up another ace. The Tigers, though, used six consecutive points to pull away en route to a ten-point set win.
Madison College's pursuit of a national title faded in the fourth set when Cowley built an 18-8 lead thanks to a 12-2 surge. The WolfPack didn't quit, pulling to within 22-17, but was unable to complete the rally as the Tigers won the match on an ace.
Madison College finished with 36 kills and a .061 attack percentage, compared to 45 kills and a .174 efficiency for Cowley. The WolfPack also amassed ten aces, 11 blocks, and 52 digs.
Vosberg, an outside hitter from Cuba City, Wisconsin, racked up career-best 20 kills and hit at a .185 clip. The team-leader in kills now boasts 26 matches with double-digit kills. She also was part of four blocks.
Andrews posted her 11th double-double of the season with 23 assists and a dozen digs. The native of Darlington, Wisconsin, also served up a team-leading four aces.

Avery Agnew tracked down 16 digs, to go along with seven assists, and an ace.Â
The WolfPack is now 0-2 all-time against Cowley College.

Madison College (33-5) falls into the consolation bracket and will attempt to play for fifth place overall. That pursuit begins Thursday, November 20 with a 3:30 p.m. match against the winner of a consolation elimination match between #20 Pellissippi State Community College (21-11) and #19 St. Clair County Community College (26-8). The winner will advance in the consolation bracket to play Friday, November 21 at 11:00 a.m.
