Callmer leads WolfPack at 16-team Wrigglesworth Blugold Invite

Madison College finishes 14th overall after two-day event

ALTOONA, WISC. - The Madison College golf team made improvements from Round 1 to Round 2 at the Frank Wrigglesworth Blugold Invitational on Sunday and Monday, however, it was not enough to make up any ground on the competition ahead of them on the overall leaderboard at the 16-team event hosted by NCAA Division III UW-Eau Claire at Eau Claire Golf & Country Club. The WolfPack's final 36-hole score of 662 placed them 14th overall. Freshman Brady Callmer led the way with tie for 28th overall at 16-over-par 158.

Madison College, the only two-year school in the field, slid down the leaderboard as the opening day went on, eventually falling into 14th place with a 337 team total. The Pack improved by a dozen strokes as a team on Day 2, posting a 325 that kept them in 14th and seven shots back of Augsburg University (MN). The host Blugolds won the team title by 15 strokes with a two-day score of 587 (296-291). 

Callmer, an Edgerton, Wisconsin, native, matched his career-best total for 36 holes after posting back-to-back eight-over 79 rounds. He registered eight pars and two birdies on Sunday, followed by three birdies and five pars on Monday. Callmer's back-nine total of 36 on Day 1 was the best nine-hole total for any WolfPack player. Tournament medalist Carson Brock of UW-Eau Claire went 72-73 for a 145 total. 

First year player and transfer from UC-Colorado Springs Andrew Aune also played consistent golf, signing off on consecutive rounds of 13-over 84 to sit tied for 67th with a 168 (+26) total. The Verona, Wisconsin, native racked up seven pars and one birdie during Round 1, and six pars the following day. Ethan Thomas, a freshman from Stevens Point, Wisconsin, counted a 170 (+28) total after posting 14 pars and one birdie over rounds of 87 and 83.

The final score counted by the WolfPack came from both Matt Paulson and Tyler Koch, who finished in a tie for 77th overall at 173 (+31). Koch opened with an 87, and then improved by one shot for an 86. Paulson struggled on the first day with six holes of double-bogey or worse to shoot a 94, but recovered impressively for a 79 on Monday that featured ten pars and a birdie to match Callmer for the team's best individual round. Three other Madison College golfers competed as individuals, with sophomore Jake Rebholz going 84-83 to finish tied for 64th overall at 167 (+25). The Verona, Wisconsin, product used 13 pars and three birdies. Freshmen Matt Sitte and Brent Schmiesing were separated by a single stroke at 171 (+29) and 172 (+30), respectively. Sitte improved by nine strokes over the two days with scores of 90 and 81, while Schmiesing used back-to-back 86s.

Madison College is back in competition on Thursday, September 22 when they make the short drive to New Glarus, Wisconsin, for the Match Play at the Chalet event hosted by Clarke University at Edelweiss Chalet Country Club. The WolfPack are the Match Play at the Chalet defending champions of the tournament, after defeating Southwest Tech, Clarke University, and Viterbo University in 2021. Tee times start at 9:00 a.m.
