DIXON, ILL. & DEER GROVE, ILL. - Madison College played consistent golf over the two-day Skyhawk Fall Classic on Thursday and Friday, resulting in an eighth place finish in the 14-team event split between
Timber Creek Golf Club and
Deer Valley Golf Club. The WolfPack were led by sophomore
Matthew Haggart in 20th place with a pair of sub-80 rounds.
After the opening 18 holes at Timber Creek, the Pack sat in seventh place with a 323. Madison followed it up with a 321 on Deer Valley and tied host Sauk Valley CC Black in seventh place with a 644 (+72); however, the Skyhawks were awarded seventh place based on a better Round 2 score of 317. The WolfPack was five strokes better than ninth place Rock Valley Blue. Illinois Central College took the team title with a one-over-par 573.
Haggart also found himself in a tie for 19th with three others after a ten-over 153, and was awarded 20th place individually. The Minocqua, Wisconsin, native opened with a plus-three 75 that included an even-par 35 on the back nine. He followed it up with a 78 (+7) and amassed five birdies and 19 pars for the tournament. Haggart finished 13 shots back of ICC's Trey Boecker and Connor Watson, who tied for medalist honors with a 140.
Freshmen
Kellan Jacobson and
Micah Lenway finished 29th and 30th, respectively. Jacobson posted scores of four-over 76 and 13-over 84 to reach a tie for 28th at 160 (+18). The native of Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin, had 14 pars and one birdie in Round 1. Lenway, a fellow first year from Faribault, Minnesota, was the reverese of his teammate, signing off on a 13-over 85 before settling in with a plus-five 76 for his lowest round as a collegiate player.Â
The WolfPack's final score came from freshman
Jacob Schmeltzer, who turned in 18-hole scores of 87 and 83 to place 53rd with a 170 (+27). Sophomore
Brady Piazza withdrew from the tournament in the first round due to injury, marking his second consecutive WD.
