She only played one season for the WolfPack volleyball team, suiting up for Madison College in 2006, but Kara Hilmanowski sure made an impact. In what was an All-American year, the Cross Plains, Wisconsin, native helped the team to one of its best marks in program history, as the 'Pack finished 33-6 overall.
Now, the former middle blocker, who spent her time at Madison College hindering opponents, spends her days helping folks in need of a new 'do or fresh cut. She's currently a hair stylist at Anaala Salon and Spa near Hilldale Mall in Madison.
"I have always loved doing hair, since I was a kid," said Hilmanowski. "I'd play around with my hair, friends' hair, my dog's hair, Barbie's hair, really anyone that would let me. I didn't always see myself as taking a career in this field, but I wouldn't change it for anything. I love what I do."
The Middleton High School graduate also loves working so close to her hometown. "I can see my family whenever I want," she said. "It's also fun when girls from my alma mater come in for updos for prom or homecoming, so I can get the low down on what's going on at the school."
Speaking of school, Kara plans on one day going back. "A goal I set for myself is to get my associate degree," said Hilmanowski, when asked about her future plans. "I think it's important to have, and something to always fall back on."
In the meantime, Hilmanowski spends her free time biking, hiking, paddleboarding, boating, as well as playing volleyball, of course. "The life of a hairstylist is never boring," she says. "My daily schedule is never really the same."
Nor is her taste in music. "It really depends on my mood and what I'm vibing with that day, week or month," she says. "That's the beauty of it, enjoying everything, not just one person or genre. It's nice to have that freedom for my ears and soul."
Freedom to do what she wants, when she wants. It seems Kara Hilmanowski has this game of life figured out.
