It was easily the WolfPack's most highly anticipated match in their young season, and Thursday night's matchup with defending Division III National Champion Rock Valley College did not disappoint. Playing in front of their home crowd for the first time in 2013, Madison College collected a huge 3-0 sweep of the Golden Eagles.
The first set was easily the most exciting, with the WolfPack winning 29-27, and according to sophomore middle blocker
Danielle Crawford set the tone for the rest of the match. "I think everybody had a little bit of the jitters. Everybody plays volleyball for those type of sets, the really close ones, the ones that go over 25 points. I think we pulled ourselves together nicely in that and it ended well."
After the first set scare, the WolfPack proceeded to handle their business, winning the next two 25-19 and 25-21 to secure the sweep. "The kids all week had talked about they wanted this to be a statement," said head coach
Toby Parker. "We've been working pretty hard, and we had this one (the match) circled."
Payton Klein led the team offensively with seven kills, while
Alexis Semrow tallied 31 assists. Defensively,
Vanessa Clarson came up with 21 digs, and
Danielle Crawford finished with four blocks.
With the win, Madison College improves its record to 6-0 overall, 2-0 in conference play. The team will return to action Tuesday, Sept. 3 at 6 p.m. when they host North Central Community College Conference (N4C) foe Milwaukee Area Technical College.
