The Madison College women's volleyball team is headed back to the NJCAA Division III Volleyball National Championship, beating College of DuPage and Harper College Saturday to claim the NJCAA Region IV Tournament title. The team last competed in the national tournament back in 2009, finishing second in the nation after falling to Brookhaven College in the championship game.
In the NJCAA Region IV Tournament semifinal, things went as planned for the top ranked WolfPack. Behind freshman middle blocker
Mikayla Nigl, who finished with 13 kills and two blocks, the team beat College of DuPage in straight sets, 25-12, 25-18 and 25-18.
Hannah Grahn added 34 assists, while
Vanessa Clarson picked up 17 digs and two service aces.
Against Harper College, in the tournament championship, it was a much different story, as Madison College was forced to win their first five-set match all season long. The Hawks would win sets one and three, 25-18 and 25-23 respectively, pushing the WolfPack to the brink of elimination. Luckily, led by last year's All-American
Terissa Bierd, who would finish with 20 kills in the match, the team would win the two biggest sets of their season 25-20 and 15-12.
Hannah Grahn would finish with 50 assists in the championship game.
Vanessa Clarson came through with 34 digs, and
Danielle Crawford and
Mikayla Nigl each picked up a pair of blocks.
Madison College (31-3) will find out their national tournament seed Monday, Nov. 11. The tournament, which will be held in Rochester, Minn., starts Friday, Nov. 15.
