WolfPack volleyball to open postseason versus DuPage

The quest for a national tournament berth, and potential national championship crown, will begin tomorrow for the WolfPack women's volleyball team. Madison College, on a 16-match winning streak, will open postseason play against the College of DuPage at 9 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 2. Prior to the playoffs beginning, head coach Toby Parker sat down for a quick Q&A session.

Q: This team is riding a 16-match winning streak into the postseason, how do you make sure they aren't overconfident?
A: It's talked about often. One of the many upsides to this group is they understand anyone is beatable. It has happened to us as well. They know respecting the game is important for them to attain their goals.

Q: Last year, the team that came out of your region, Rock Valley, won the national championship. How good a test is this region tournament for your team?
A: Three teams from the N4C were ranked in the top 10 all year long. I'd say it's going to be a tremendous test for whoever advances.

Q: What type of things have you seen from your sophomores lately that has you convinced that they're ready to turn things up a notch?
A: I can't really say they need to turn it up much. There's always room for improvement, but some of the things they're doing as of late are pretty impressive.

Q: We've talked about depth a lot this season. How big of a factor will that be for this team in the postseason?
A: Depth creates a wrinkle in anyone's game plan. We have used several different lineups throughout the season, starting 10 or 11 different players over the course of 32 matches. We are not a team that can be scouted on paper. That was a specific goal of my staff and I going into the season.

Q: What will it take in your mind to make it to the national tournament? Furthermore, what does it take for a team to win nationals?
A: We really need to focus on the things that have gotten us to this point; staying comfortable, confident and healthy. I believe our regular-season schedule has prepared us for both the region tournament, as well as a run at a national championship. The tests have been plenty, with lessons learned every step of the way.

Q: With the regular-season now under your belt, what's the one thing that you think your team does better than your opponents?
A: I think we in-game adjust better than most. I know for a fact I have never had a group that does it quite like this team. We have a very high volleyball I.Q. When you spend time at the top, with both the #1 ranking and the conference championship, opponents rarely hesitate to try new things against us. Everyone wants to knock you off that mountain. I'm proud of my staff and athletes for the work put in.
