FORT DODGE, IOWA - The Madison College women's volleyball team limped into the Iowa Central Tournament with several players battling injuries; however, they secured three wins and gutted out four tough performances. The #18-ranked WolfPack went 2-0 on Friday, earning a 3-2 victory over previously undefeated Central Community College and a 3-1 upset of #11-ranked Mesa Community College. Saturday opened with a 3-1 defeat of #6 (Div. III) Minnesota West Community & Technical College before wrapping up the weekend with a 3-1 loss to #3-ranked and host Tritons.
Match #1: #18 Madison College 3, Central Community College 2 (25-14, 23-25, 23-25, 25-15, 15-9)
The first-ever meeting between Madison College and Central Community College resulted in the third five-set match in the first six contests of the season for the WolfPack. Tied at 6-6 in the opening set, the Pack put together a 6-1 surge to gain some separation and then closed out the set with the last six points.
Sets two and three resulted in a pair of narrow setbacks as the Raiders seized a two-sets-to-one advantage in the match. Central held a 12-4 edge in the second set before holding off a late surge from the Pack, while the third set was a back-and-forth struggle in which Madison was ahead 23-19 before CCC closed on a 6-0 run.
A six-point stretch early in the fourth set went in favor of the WolfPack for an 11-6 differential, and the slowly pulled away from there, leading by as much as 11 en route to forcing a decisive fifth set. Madison College opened the fifth with four consecutive points, a stretch bookended by aces from sophomore
Sam Schultz. The Raiders would close to within two on a few occasions; however, the Pack kept them at arms length to take the match.
The WolfPack racked up 20 aces in the win, their most in a match in two years. They also tallied a season-high 58 kills with a .220 attack percentage. Defensively, Madison posted 112 digs for their highest single-match total in five years, while also reaching nine blocks.
Ella Vosberg, a sophomore from Cuba City, Wisconsin, was tops with a season-best 19 kills and 12 digs for her third double-double of the season. She also added a pair of aces.
Second year setter
Allie Andrews registered her second career triple-double with 52 assists, 11 kills, and 13 digs. The assist and kill totals both established new season-high's for the native of Darlington, Wisconsin.
Makayla Dallas finished with a double-double of ten kills and 24 digs.
Sam Schultz had nine kills and a team-leading 30 digs, to go along with a career-high nine aces.
Braelee Kiepert and Dallas each had three aces.
Jaydon Golsteyn reached 21 digs and two aces.
Caylee Coggins led the blocking effort with four.
Match #2: #18 Madison College 3, #11 Mesa Community College 1 (25-22, 22-25, 25-22, 27-25)
The day's second match was a battle of ranked teams in the first-ever meeting between Madison and Mesa. The WolfPack took advantage of a 5-0 run midway through the opening set to go ahead 16-11; however, the Thunderbirds answered in the second set with a 10-2 surge to open the set. The WolfPack rallied back to pull even at 16-16 before dropping the next three points and the set. Set three came down five-point swing for Madison, which turned an 18-16 deficit into a 21-18 lead. The WolfPack led by as much as seven in the fourth set, which was tied at 23 when a Thunderbirds serving error gave the Pack match point. Mesa responded with back-to-back points to secure set point before Madison closed out the match with three consecutive points, ignited by a
Makayla Dallas kill.
For the match, the WolfPack tallied 44 kills, 17 aces, three blocks, and 109 digs.
Dallas, a Valders, Wisconsin, native, was tops offensively with 14 kills, to go along with 20 digs and two aces for a double-double.
Ella Vosberg hit at a .375 clip en route to a double-double of 12 kills and 13 digs, as well as two aces.
Allie Andrews recorded a double-double of 38 assists and 23 digs, as well as three aces.
Sam Schultz lead the serving game with five aces, followed by four from
Jaydon Golsteyn. Golsteyn keyed the defensive effort in the back row with 25 digs, while Schultz had 13 and
Amara Jahner added ten.
Match #3: #18 Madison College 3, #6 Minnesota West Community & Technical College 1 (22-25, 25-19, 25-13, 25-15)
Saturday's first match against the sixth-ranked team in NJCAA Division III began with Minnesota West breaking a 12-12 tie with six consecutive points as they went on to win the opening set. The rest of the match belonged to the WolfPack, who now leads the all-time series by a 9-1 count. Madison rallied from an early deficit and claimed the final six points in set two. Set three and four both saw the Pack secure early leads and roll to victory.
Offensively,
Ella Vosberg paced the Pack with 17 kills and a .298 attack percentage. She also added nine digs.
Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, native,
Sam Schultz had ten kills and a .261 efficiency, to go along with eight digs.
Setter
Allie Andrews finished with 39 assists, 15 digs, five kills, and a team-leading two blocks.

Match #4: #3 Iowa Central Community College 3, #18 Madison College 1 (16-25, 35-33, 23-25, 24-26)
The finale of the weekend marked another battle of ranked teams and three of the four sets being decided by two points. An early WolfPack lead in the first set quickly changed with an 8-1 surge by Iowa Central, who went on to win by nine. The second set was an unbelievable back-and-forth battle with Madison holding set point at 24-23 after an ICCC error. Over the next 21 points, the WolfPack held set point five more times and the Tritons four times before the seventh Madison College set point at 34-33 resulted in a
Sam Schultz kill to end the set. Both teams scraped and clawed for every point over the next two sets, and after Iowa Central took the third, Madison was up 23-22 in the fourth when an illegal hit evened the score at 23-23. The WolfPack fought off one match point for ICCC thanks to a kill by
Allie Andrews; however, Iowa Central used back-to-back kills to close out the match.
The WolfPack amassed 57 kills, eight aces, two blocks, and an incredible 141 digs, their highest single-match digs total since tracking down 143 against Lake Michigan College on September 11, 2021.
Ella Vosberg recorded her fifth double-double with 18 kills and 13 digs.
Sam Schultz had her first double-double of the season and tenth of her career with 12 kills and a team-high 29 digs. And
Makayla Dallas' ten kills and 24 digs marked her fifth double-double, while matching her career-high for digs.
Allie Andrews finished with 48 assist, 26 digs, six kills, and team-high three aces as part of her sixth double-double. Others with double-digit digs included 22 by
Jaydon Golsteyn and ten by
Braelee Kiepert.
Madison College trails the all-time series by a 5-2 margin.

Madison College (6-3) returns to Region 4 competition on Wednesday, September 9 with an in-state showdown against Bryant & Stratton College (1-2). The WolfPack has won nine straight matches over the Bobcats, and own an 11-1 advantage in head-to-head meetings going back to 2018. First serve has been moved to 6:30 p.m. at OAW Indoor Sports Complex in New Berlin, Wisconsin.
