It took five sets, but the Madison College women's volleyball team returned to the Region IV Championship match for the second-consecutive season. The WolfPack outlasted Harper College in the fifth set 15-10 after going back-and-forth with the Hawks in the first four sets 20-25, 25-22, 21-25, 25-21.
The WolfPack (25-7) were lifted by a career day from first-year setter
Kirsten Halma. She amassed a season-best 40 assists and 10 digs in the match.
Two other first-year players,
Hannah Schwartzer and
Hilary Frey also came up big for the WolfPack in the five-set match.
Schwartzer got down for 18 digs and
Frey killed 17 shots against the Hawks.
Second-year players
Skye Kapinus and
April Testman also contributed to the team's 54 kills.
Kapinus recorded 13, while
Testman had 10 kills along with three of the WolfPack's nine blocks.
It was the fourth win over the Hawks this season for the WolfPack and the second time that they dropped the first set only to rally and win the match. The win gave the WolfPack a third and final opportunity to defeat Rock Valley College, with the reward being an opportunity to compete for a national championship.
