BYRON, ILL. - A very promising start for the Madison College golf team went south over the course of three rounds and resulted in a seventh place finish at the Region 4 Division II Tournament at
PrairieView Golf Club, which ran Sunday through Tuesday. The WolfPack were led by freshman
Matthew Haggart, who earned Third Team All-Region 4 honors with a Top 15 placement. The tournament brings to a close the first year of WolfPack golf coach
Chris Soulier.
The 36-hole event saw Madison College, who last year finished second to qualify for the national tournament, leading the 11-team field through the opening nine holes. However, the WolfPack dropped to fourth with a 322 opening day team score and were 13 shots back of the leader, Black Hawk College. Monday's second round did result in a one-shot improvement with a 321 score. It also saw Illinois Valley Community College and Carl Sandurg College leapfrog the Pack on the leaderboard to fall to sixth place. The fall continued with Round 3 and a 324 score for a three-day total of 967. Black Hawk College defended their crown with a 916 (309-309-298) after posting the tournament's only sub-300 team score on Tuesday. The Braves will be joined at the national tournament by second place Highland Community College with a 931 and third place Bryant & Stratton College at 947.
Haggart and sophomore
Peter Gustafson found themselves in a five-person playoff for all-region accolades. When the dust settled, Haggart was 14th with a three-day total of 236. The Minocqua, Wisconsin, native, turned around his tournament after posting a nine-over-par 81 on Sunday, to turn in consecutive sub-80 rounds of seven-over 79 and four-over 76. For the tournament, Haggart recorded an eagle and three birdies, while also earning the No. 2 alternate for the national tournament. Gustafson was one-shot back with a 237 to finish in 16th place, missing out on repeat all-region honors by one spot. The former Monticello HS athlete was tied for 10th after an opening round six-over 78, and followed it up with a plus-seven 79 and plus-eight 80. Gustafson registered two birdies over the three days.
Freshman
Brady Piazza finished his debut collegiate season with a 244 to tie for 29th overall. He signed off on rounds of 82-79-83, with all three of his birdies coming during Monday's second round.
Alex Sutter and
Roberto Reyes placed 40th and tied for 41st, respectively. Sutter went 87-84-85 to reach 256 for the tournament with a team-leading five birdies, while Reyes shot 259 with scores of 81-92-86.
