SEASON PREVIEW: WolfPack believes bolstered pitching staff could drive successful season

Kalinowski sees added depth, speed as factors in 2025

The Madison College softball team is ready and primed for a monster season in 2025. The WolfPack has been on the cusp of reaching the top of Region 4 for three consecutive years following a three-year run of region championships that resulted in NJCAA national tournament appearances under head coach Leo Kalinowski. This year's squad returns eight second year players, and will be bolstered by the addition of 15 newcomers.

At the top of the sophomore class coming back to Robert D. Goodman Softball Field is pitcher Kendall Weik. The righthander from Fifield, Wisconsin, was a Third Team All-Region 4 selection in her debut season, which ended with a place on the Region 4 District B All-Tournament Team. Weik was 15-5 with 117 strikeouts over 124.1 innings, placing her top five in program history in all three categories for a single season. She also led the team with a 3.10 earned run average. Also back is fellow righty Brooke Steinhorst, who generated a 6-5 record with a 5.44 ERA and 44 strikeouts in 63.0 innings.

Steinhorst is also part of a potent lineup of returning hitters for Madison College, which did lose its top four bats from last spring. Second year catcher/infielder Brooke Anderson, a Plain, Wisconsin, native and two-sport athlete for the WolfPack, had the top-returning average of .398 in 2024, and racked up 47 hits, 36 runs, and 35 runs scored. Infielder Ava Stahl will likely hit ahead of Anderson in the lineup after posting a team-leading 52 runs scored as a freshman, a number that fell five shy of the program record for a single season. The product of Wautoma, Wisconsin, batted .390 and produced an impressive seven triples out of her 48 total hits, to go along with 20 stolen bases. Rylee Rogers and Steinhorst combined for 48 hits, 35 runs, and 27 RBI.

"This is an extremely strong group of player," stated Kalinowski, who begins his 15th season leading the WolfPack. "They bring a lot of talent and very good leadership to our team. The sophomores will make up the core of our lineup and pitching staff this season."

As for the incoming class, Kalinowski and the coaching staff expect them to step in immediately and fill voids at key positions. The challenge, however, will be identifying who those players will be as all are expected to compete for playing time.

A trio of outfielders appear likely candidates for productive debut seasons after stellar high school careers. Cora Nelson is fresh off a high school career at Mishicot HS that included three appearances at the WIAA Division 4 State Tournament, with one championship as a freshman and a Wisconsin Fastpitch Softball Coaches Association All-State honor as a junior. Hayden Schabel, who also plays catcher, was part of a WIAA Division 3 State Runner-up team from Mayville HS, and was twice named WFSCA All-State. And Cary, Illinois, native, Kaley Koltz was a two-time all-state selection as an outfielder and broke her school's record for stolen bases. Lauryn Etienne of Oregon, Wisconsin, and Jeneya Marquez Perez from Monona Grove HS will likely play significant roles within the pitching staff.

"The pitching staff will be strong thanks to our key returners, as well as the support of some strong arms coming in. The starting lineup, both at the plate and in the field, will be highly competitive with a combination speed and depth. This should be a team that makes some noise again in Region 4.

The schedule begins later this week in Little River, South Carolina, with the teams annual spring trip. The WolfPack will play a dozen games over six days, including a March 17 clash with Louisburg College, who opens the season ranked #5 in the NJCAA Division II Preseason Poll. Madison College returns to the Midwest to host Highland Community College on March 22 for the home and Region 4 opener. In all, the Pack is slated to host seven doubleheaders, as well as one Region 4 Triangular on April 19 against McHenry County College and Carl Sandburg College. One of the home twin bills will be April 15 against in-state rival and #20-ranked Bryant & Stratton College. Madison College will hit the road for showdowns with #22 Kankakee Community College on April 6 and #8 Rock Valley College on April 22. The regular season wraps up on April 26 with a Sophomore Day doubleheader against Joliet Junior College.

Postseason play officially begins with the Region 4 Tournament Quarterfinal on May 3-4, with a three-team round robin event hosted by the higher seed. Winners advance to the NJCAA Region 4 Division II Midwest District A & B Tournaments at Black Hawk College in Moline, Illinois, from May 10-11. The ultimate goal is earning the program's first trip to the 2025 NJCAA Division II Softball Championships since the 2021 season. The national tournament runs May 19-24 in Oxford, Alabama.
