JANESVILLE, WISC. - The Madison College golf team opened the 2024-25 season a week later than anticipated, and finished the two-day, 36-hole Culver's Edgewood College Fall Classic tied for 15th on Friday and Saturday at
Glen Erin Golf Club. Freshman
Roberto Reyes was the top individual finisher with a tie for fifth overall in the 120-person field. The event also marked the first for new WolfPack head coach
Chris Soulier.
Madison College played with a four-person lineup for the duration of the tournament and sat tied for 17th after Round 1 with a 317 team score. They managed to drop that total by seven strokes - the fifth biggest drop by a team in the tournament - and posted a 310 to reach 627 for the event. The WolfPack tied with Milwaukee School of Engineering and Wisconsin Lutheran College "B" for 15th. UW-Stout dominated the field with their "A" team taking the title following a 573 to outpace their "B" team in second place by eight shots. The only other two-year team in the field was Blackhawk Technical College, a new Region 4 program from Janesville. The Talons were 22nd with a 742 score.
Reyes, a native of Sheboygan, Wisconsin, was in the Top 10 of the tournament field for the entirety of the two-day event. Starting on the back nine for Round 1, he posted a ten-hole stretch from Hole #18 to Hole #9 where he was three under par en route to an even-par 71 for the day. After five birdies and eight pars on Friday, he turned in a score of two-over 73 for Round 2 with 16 pars and one birdie. Reyes was part of a five-way tie at 144 (+2) and was three shots behind individual champions Carter Ruegsegger of University of Dubuque and Andrew Bauer of UW-Stout. The 144 ties for the fifth-best 36-hole individual total in program history.
Fellow freshman
Matthew Haggart tied for 58th overall with a 156 (+14) total. The Minocqua, Wisconsin, native, shot consecutive rounds of seven-over-par 78, with 13 pars - included nine consecutive - on Friday, followed by one birdie and ten pars on Saturday.Â
Sophomore
Alex Sutter had the biggest improvement over the course of two rounds, signing off on an 86 (+15) to open the weekend and then dropping nine shots for a five-over 77 on Saturday. The former Mount Horeb HS athlete finished at 163 (+21) and in an eight-way tie for 89th overall. In all Sutter amassed two birdies and 15 pars.
First year and Madison, Wisconsin, native,
Ben Arnett also played consistent golf with back-to-back rounds of 11-over 82 to finish right behind Sutter. His 164 (+22) total placed him 97th after registering 18 pars over the two days.
