ALTOONA, WISC. - Consistent play over two days at
Eau Claire Golf & Country Club resulted in an eighth place finish for the Madison College golf team, the only two-year program competing at the Frank Wrigglesworth Blugold Invitational hosted by UW-Eau Claire on Sunday and Monday. Freshmen
Matthew Haggart and
Brady Piazza led the way with finishes in the Top 25 in a field of 18 teams and 104 golfers.
The WolfPack posted a 315 team score after Round 1 to sit tied for eighth going into the final 18 holes. An improvement of two strokes allowed Madison College to hold its position in the Top Ten to post a 628 team score after 36 holes. UW-Stout and UW-Superior were four shots better in a tie for sixth, while Nebraska Wesleyan registered a 590 team score to earn the overall team title ahead of the host Blugolds at 592.
Haggart, a first year player from Minocqua, Wisconsin, was 16th place after Sunday's opening round after using two birdies and ten pars to register a five-over-par 76. Round 2 included a shaky front nine and an even-par back nine en route to a seven-over 78 with two birdies and nine pars to reach a 154 (+12) total and tie for 24th place with three others. One of those other players was Piazza, a fellow freshman from Waunakee, Wisconsin, who shot the inverse of Haggart over two rounds. Piazza opened with a plus-seven 78 that included a pair of birdies and ten pars, followed by a plus-five 76 on the strength of 11 pars and one birdie. The rounds of 76 establish season-lows for both Haggart and Piazza. The tournament medalist was UWEC's Corey Boerner with a one-over 143.
Sophomore
Peter Gustafson made his season debut in Northwest Wisconsin, and the returning All-Region 4 player shaved four strokes off his opening round 81 (+10) with a six-over-par 77 on Day Two. The Monticello, Wisconsin, native racked up 18 pars and three birdies en route to a 158 (+16) and a tie for 45th place.Â
Roberto Reyes, a freshman from Sheboygan, Wisconsin, was unable to continue his hot play from two weeks earlier as he went 80-82 for a 162 (+20) that put him tied for 65th place. For the tournament, he signed off on 16 pars and three birdies, with all three birdies coming on the front nine during Round 1. Second year
