SEASON PREVIEW: WolfPack ready to start new decade under new leadership

New coaching staff to lean on returning players throughout the season

The Madison College women's soccer program is ready to embark on its second decade as a program after starting in 2014. Timing is such that the WolfPack's 11th season also brings the transition to a new leadership group as second year men's soccer head coach Logan Fye takes over as the first coach in school history to lead both teams simultaneously. Fye and the Pack officially start their season on Saturday, August 31 against Moraine Valley Community College.

"I am very excited to return key players from last season's 8-4-3 team," stated Fye, who takes over after a highly successful eight-year run for the WolfPack under Matt Schwartz. "They have all made my transition into the job a smoother one with their commitment, leadership, and work ethic. The coaching staff expects to see all of them making their impact felt throughout the season!"

Fye has brought with him two members of the men's soccer coaching staff, Austin Backus and Alex Alvarado. Backus will serve as associate head coach for the women. Joining that group is Sara Stern, a local prep star from McFarland, Wisconsin, who went on to a decorated career at NCAA Division I UW-Milwaukee.

The returning group aiding with the transition and leading the newcomers consists of eight players. The trio of forward Atziry Ocampo, midfielder Camille Gilbertson, and defender Mirella Zielke has led the charge. Ocampo, a Monroe, Wisconsin, native, posted five goals and four assists as a freshman, while Gilbertson, a native of Cottage Grove, Wisconsin, was right behind with four goals and one assist. That duo accounts for all of the returning scoring from 2023 after losing 76% of their offense to graduation. Zielke, a product of Edgerton, Wisconsin, led the team in minutes a year ago with 1,140 and followed it up by playing every minute of every game over the second half of the Madison College women's basketball season.

"Mirella led the team in minutes played last season and is a stout defender who will be key to keeping our opponents off the scoresheet. Cami provides end-to-end play helping us create goal scoring opportunities. Atziry is a constant threat in attack who showed that she is capable of producing goals and assists for the WolfPack. I expect all of our second years to take steps forward to help lead us back to the Region 4 Tournament."

The incoming class has shown tremendous promise throughout fall camp. Midfielder Jerzey Ladwig joins the team as a transfer from NCAA Division II UW-Parkside, where she played in three games for the Rangers. Midfielders Grace Brown and Suzy Hinds Cruz, and defender Maddie Cadd seek to fill the holes left by three departed All-Region 4 players from 2023.

"After having taken over the women's program in March 2024, I am ecstatic with the recruiting class that we were able to put together in preparation for this fall season. We have quality players joining in every position and we can't wait to get to work on continuing their development and seeing them suit up for the WolfPack! Grace is a talented player with great athleticism who will see minutes at both midfield and forward. Maddie is a strong & aggressive defender who brings a talented left foot and some defensive stability to the team. Suzy is a wide player who can dominate a match both on the offensive and defensive ends. Jerzey brings a year of college experience to the squad and will be a key cog in midfield and someone we look to play through in nearly every possession. There are countless others who will contribute to the team this season and in 2025 as well."

The season was slated to begin on August 24 with a home match against Oakton College; however, the Owls called off the match due to a shortage of players. That postponed the season opener to this weekend, followed by a new home opener on September 7 against the College of DuPage at 3:15 p.m. Defending Region 4 champion Rock Valley College comes to Madison on September 18. The Golden Eagles are ranked #14 in the NJCAA Division II Preseason Poll. South Suburban College is receiving votes in the poll and will host the WolfPack on October 9 to start a three-match road swing that follows a three-match home stand.

Madison College will again host the Region 4 Division II Women's Soccer Championship on November 9. To get there, the WolfPack would also need to earn wins in a November 2 quarterfinal and a November 5 semifinal. The Region 4 winner will advance to the 2024 NJCAA Division II National Tournament in Huntsville, Alabama, from November 17-23.

"I am confident that we will have a tight knit group due to our outstanding leadership group of our second year players. Our new players will benefit tremendously as they get a feel for what college soccer is like. I am confident that we will have the team to compete with everyone on our schedule. My goal for every match is to perform well and get our desired result, which is certainly attainable for this group. Depth and injuries may be a challenge for us, but we expect the team to lean on one another to get through moments of adversity. And I look forward to seeing who steps up in the big moments to carry us to success. I couldn't be more excited to get going in Year 1 with the WolfPack women!"
