SHEBOYGAN FALLS & SAUKVILLE, WISC. - The final tournament of the regular season - and thus the final preparation before the Region 4 Tournament - presented several logistical challenges for the Madison College golf team, who overcame them to finish fourth at the BSC Legends Classic on Thursday and Friday. The WolfPack opened with a 344 at The Bull at Pineshurst Farms, and after hustling back to Madison for The Wolfie Awards that night, returned for Round 2 at The Bog and posted a 313 for a two-day, 36-hole total of 657 (+25) to place fourth out of six teams.
Madison College finished ahead of the only other junior college team in the field, host Bryant & Stratton College, while finishing 39 shots back of champion Aurora University at 618 (+13). The WolfPack's 31 shot improvement from day one to day two marked the most by any team.
First year player
Peter Gustafson keyed that rebound effort as he followed a 12-over-par 84 on Thursday with a career-best two-over 74 on Friday. The native of Monticello, Wisconsin, had eight pars and one birdie over his first 18 holes, and then carded ten pars and three birdies the following day to finish tied for eighth at 158 (+14). Aurora University's Jack Vercautren, a former College of DuPage golfer, won the event with a 152 (+8/80-72).
Sophomore
Brent Schmiesing was right on his heels, ending the tournament in a tie for tenth at 159 (+15). The Fitchburg, Wisconsin, native shot ten-over 82 and plus-five 77, amassing four birdies and 20 pars.
The biggest turnaround in the entire field belonged to WolfPack sophomore
Braeden Skifton, who improved by 13 strokes after posting a frustrating 91 (+19) on Thursday. The former Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln HS athlete then shot a six-over-par 78 to reach 169 (+25) for the tournament and tie for 19th. Skifton had two birdies and 20 pars.Â
The final counted score for Madison College was freshman
Alex Sutter with a 172 (+28) that placed him in a two-way tie for 23rd. He totaled three birdies and 14 pars over two rounds that finished with an 88 (+16) and an 84 (+12).
Second year
Brady Callmer started the tournament for Madison College, shooting an 86 (+14) at the Bull; however, he was unable to play the second day.
Sophomore
Tyler Koch competed as an individual and finished in 26th place with a 174 (+30) after posting single-day scores of 90 (+18) and 84 (+12). Koch tallied 13 pars and one birdie.
