Double eagle offsets late string of bogeys for Madison College freshman

CHAUTAUQUA, NY - He hit the shot of the day. And Madison College's Brent Schmiesing used the magic of a rare albatross to overcome a three bogeys over his last four holes to post a second consecutive four-over-par 76 during Thursday's Round 3 of the 2023 NJCAA Division III Men's Golf Championships at Chautauqua Golf Club. Opening on the front side, Schmiesing followed a bogey on his second hole with his third string of five consecutive pars in as many days. A bogey on No. 8 and a closing par gave the Region 4 medalist a 37 through nine holes.

After making the turn, he sank a birdie putt on the par 5 tenth hole, and then fell to three-over for the day with his first true double bogey at No. 12. The response was epic. Schmiesing hit a 316-yard drive on the short par 5 at No. 13, leaving himself a 180-yard approach. He lofted his next shot right at the pin and it fell in the cup for the rare double-eagle. It's the first albatross of the tournament and the tenth "eagle". Schmiesing, a native of Fitchburg, Wisconsin, parred the next hole before playing holes No. 15 through 17 in four over with a double bogey and two bogeys. One final par on No. 18 and he signed off on a two-over 39 for the back nine to reach 76.  After 54 holes in western New York, Schmiesing trails the leader Ben Read of Sandhills Community College by 23 shots. Read is one of three players under par for the tournament. He also trails the tandem of Patrick Murray of Union Community College and Kevin Orouke from Nassau Community College by one shot for 18th place, which is the cutoff for NJCAA All-American honors.

The team title remains a two-team race between Sandhills Community College (862) and Georgia Military College (883). Fellow Region 4 representatives College of DuPage made a big jump on moving day with a 305 to leapfrog from fifth to third at 943.
