CHAUTAUQUA, NY - A disastrous third hole in Tuesday's opening round of the
2023 NJCAA Division III Men's Golf Championships at
Chautauqua Golf Course could have completely derailed the rest of the day, however, Madison College's
Brent Schmiesing stayed the course and overcame it to card an eight-over-par 80. The freshman sits in a five-way tie for 26th overall.

Making his first appearance at a national tournament, Schmiesing began on the front nine and posted pars consecutive pars to get his day started. The par 5 No. 3 gave the Fitchburg, Wisconsin, native all sorts of trouble, as he eventually sank a putt on his tenth stroke of the hole. Schmiesing put it behind him immediately, and responded with a string of five pars in a row before finishing the outward nine with a bogey for a six-over 41. The third hole proved to be one the most challenging on the course during Day 1 with 44 scores of bogey or worse.
Another par followed by his lone birdie of the day on the opening two holes of the back nine had the first year player at plus-five on the day. He played the final six holes in two-over-par and finished the round with a dozen pars and was eight-over overall. Schmiesing finished the day leading a group of six that are ranked third for pars
The individual leader is Alex Martin of Sandhills Community College (NC) at four-under-par 68. Region 4 champion College of DuPage is fifth on the team leaderboard after a 323, with Sandhills in front at 292.

Round 2 begins at 8:00 a.m. CT on Wednesday, May 7, with Schmiesing teeing off of No. 10 at 8:36 a.m. CT. Tee times and pairings for Thursday and Friday will be determined based on the day's results.
