WolfPack defeat Southwest Tech in Match Play at the Chalet

Defending champs fall 10.5 points shy of team title in New Glarus

NEW GLARUS, WISC. - One year after winning the team trophy at the inaugural Match Play at the Chalet at Edelweiss Chalet Country Club, the Madison College golf team defeated their head-to-head opponent while coming up just short for the overall team title on Thursday. The WolfPack downed Southwest Technical College by a 57.0-33.0 point tally, but finished 10.5 team points back of Wisconsin Lutheran College at 67.5 points for the team trophy.

Madison College came out on top of every individual match play competition on the day, led by freshman transfer Andrew Aune's impressive 14.5 points to earn an 11-point win over Roberto Raza. Fellow first year Ethan Thomas racked up an 11.5-6.5 victory against Brandon Wanty. Brady Callmer and Tyler Koch each tallied 10.5-7.5 point differentials against Dakota Rezachek and Payton Wright, respectively. Rounding out the team scoring was sophomore Matt Paulson, who defeated Cameron Frye 10.0-8.0.

Wisconsin Lutheran College was able to pick up a 67.5-22.5 victory over Concordia University Wisconsin to secure the 2022 championship, while host Clarke University narrowly clipped Viterbo University by a 47.5-42.5 margin.

Three additional WolfPack golfers competed in match play competitions outside of the team format. Sophomore Jake Rebholz, who along with Aune played Edelweiss Chalet Country Club as their home course at Verona Area High School, racked up a 14.0-4-0 win over Mitchell Coffey of Clarke University. First year player Brent Schmiesing also earned a 14.0-4.0 decision against Vincent Forseth of the Pride. And freshman Matt Sitte played a three-way match play against Alex Beard of Clarke University and Matt Wejrowski, and came out on top by an 11.5-5.0-2.0 margin.

Madison College is off for more than a week until the Region 4 Preview/Classic on Friday, September 30 at PrairieView Golf Club in Byron, Illinois. The event will feature every golf team within Region 4 and is designed as a preview of the Region 4 Tournaments, which will be in October for Division II and May 2023 for Division III. Tee times begin at 10:00 a.m.
