Madison College places two teams in Top 8 at Highland "36" to open new season

Freshmen Sitte, Callmer lead the way with Top 15 finishes

FREEPORT, ILL. - The Madison College golf team opened the 2022-23 season on Friday with the Highland "36" hosted by Highland Community College at Park Hills Golf Course, and the WolfPack placed two teams in the top eight. Madison College Grey combined to shoot a 646 total and placed sixth overall, 17 shots ahead of Madison College Navy in eighth place with a 663.

Madison College Grey posted a 325 on the first round, with the Navy team five off their pace ta 330. The second 18 holes finished with a four-shot improvement by Grey to a 321, wihle Navy posted a 333. Black Hawk College won the team title with an impressive 609 total after shooting a 303 and a 306.

Freshman Matt Sitte led the team with a 155 in his collegiate debut. The Wausau, Wisconsin, native, who was playing in the No. 4 spot for the Grey, and opened with a two-over-par 74. Tied for fifth individually at that point, Sitte carded an nine-over 81 on his second tour to reach 11th overall. Black Hawk College's Luke Lofgren, who won the Texas Roadhouse Madison College Invitational as a freshman in 2021, was the medalist with a ten-under-par 134.

Fellow first year Brady Callmer, a native of Edgerton, Wisconsin, tied for 14th overall with a 14-over-par 158. He shot 77 and 81 as a member of the Grey team, which also counted a pair of 167s (+23) from first year transfer's Andrew Aune (88-79) and Tyler Koch (86-81) as they tied each other for 36th overall.

Madison College Navy's top score came Ethan Thomas, a freshman from Stevens Point, Wisconsin. His seven-over 79 on the opening 18 holes was the lone sub-80 round of the day for the Navy team, and he followed it up with an 83 (+11) to place tied for 22nd with a 162 (+18). Brent Schmiesing was a shot behind as he went 80-83 to sign off on a 163 (+19) final score and tied for 28th overall. Sophomore Matt Paulson came in with a tie for 33rd at 166 (+22) after going 81-85 on the day, and fellow second year Jake Rebholz registered a 90 and an 82 to finished tied for 42nd out of 75 players with a 172 (+28).

Madison College will compete in the two-day, 36-hole Culver's-Edgewood College Classic on Friday, September 2 and Saturday, September 3 at Glen Erin Golf Club in Janesville, Wisconsin. The multi-team event featuring mostly four-year programs will get started at 11:30 a.m. on Day 1, followed by an 8:30 a.m. tee time on Day 2.
