BYRON, ILL. - The Madison College golf team showed tremendous promise at Friday's Region 4 Preview tournament at PrairieView Golf Club, site of Region 4 Division III Tournament in May 2023. The WolfPack finished with a 325 team total to place sixth, however, with the right combination of players, the Pack could have signed off on a season-best 310 total and moved up two spots on the leaderboard. Freshman transfer
Andrew Aune played as an individual, and was one of three players to shoot in the 70s.
Madison College's 325 marks the third time this fall they have posted that score, which ranks tied for it's second best 18-hole team total. The WolfPack was seven strokes back of fifth place Carl Sandburg College, with fellow Division III contenders College of DuPage (329) and Rock Valley College (343) finishing seventh and eighth, respectively. Alexandria Tech (MN) won the team title with a 300.
Aune, a native of Verona, Wisconsin, and a transfer from UC-Colorado Springs, signed off an a career-best round of three-over-par 75 to sit in seventh place overall. It's the best individual finish in a stroke-play format event for the WolfPack this fall. First year
Ethan Thomas, a Stevens Point, Wisconsin, product, also competed as an individual, and carded a career-low five-over-par 77. Thomas tied for 11th place overall.
The Madison College team total was led by freshman
Brady Callmer, as the former Edgerton HS athlete sat between Aune and Thomas with a four-over 76, also establishing a new career-best. His even-par back nine score of 36 was the team's top nine-hole total for the shotgun start tournament. Callmer finished in a three-way tie for eight place. The individual tournament medalist was Hank Sogge of Alexandria Tech with an even-par 72.
Two additional freshmen,
Brent Schmiesing and
Matt Sitte, matched each other with rounds of ten-over-par 82. The duo was part of a tie for 26th overall, while sophomore
Jake Rebholz contributed an 85 (+13) to tie for 39th. Freshman transfer
Tyler Koch was one shot back at 86 (+14) and tied for 41st overall.
