NEW VANTAGE POINT: WolfPack eyeing big finish as #2 seed in NJCAA DII World Series

Madison College to open tournament play today vs. #7 Northeast CC

Seeding at the NJCAA Division II World Series has only been around for a few years, and in 2019, the Madison College baseball team is hoping to take full advantage of receiving one of its best tournament placements in program history. The #2-seeded WolfPack are back in Enid, Oklahoma, for a second straight year - and ninth-time overall - with plans on improving a fifth-place finish in 2018 and complete one of the best season's in school history.

Madison College boasts a 40-9 record, giving coach Mike Davenport and the WolfPack the most wins and fewest losses of anyone in the tournament field. They also own the program's 12th 40-win season and first since 2015. The 'Pack has won 11 straight games, including five in postseason play by a margin of 48-12.

With 13 sophomores on the roster following last year's deep tournament run, the WolfPack can start a second year player in every position and plan to use that experience to navigate the challenges of the week ahead.

Second year players own seven of the top nine batting averages on the team, the top seven hit totals, the first six places in the runs scored category, and spots one through seven in runs batted in. Second baseman Nick Gile has been at the forefront, leading the WolfPack with a .436 average, 65 hits, and 51 RBI, while ranking second in runs scored with 50. The Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, native has made a name for himself in the Madison College record books, becoming the program's all-time leader in RBI and doubles, while also climbing up several other single-season and career lists.

Similarly, righthander Matt Hamilton made history this spring as he overtook the top spot in Madison College history for career wins by a pitcher, which now stands at 19. The Oak Creek, Wisconsin, product has been perfect on the season with a 10-0 record - tied for fourth most wins in the nation - and a 2.03 earned run average, while leading the 'Pack with 75 strikeouts. Hamilton has not done it alone, as fellow sophomore Eliot Turnquist has filled the role of closer and registered a 1.27 ERA and nine saves, tied for sixth most in the country. And fellow sophomore Troy Hickey tossed a scoreless seven-plus innings in the Region IV final to send the WolfPack back to Enid.

Madison College opened the season with their annual trip to Arizona, where they posted a 5-6. Since returning from the desert, they have won 35 of 38 games, including a 16-game win streak that ended the same night that Hamilton broke the record and the WolfPack secured a sixth North Central Community College Conference Championship.

Wet weather delayed the start of the NJCAA Division II World Series, pushing the WolfPack's opening contest back to Monday, April 27 at 1:00 p.m. Second-seeded Madison College will draw #7-seed Northeast Community College after the Hawks defeated #10-seeded Monroe Community College 12-11 to improve to 35-18 in just their second year as a program. The winner will advance to quarterfinal round on Tuesday at 1:00 p.m., while the loser will play Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. in an elimation game.
