WolfPack cap regular season with rout of Milwaukee

Madison College hosts Joliet Junior College in Region IV Quarterfinal on Saturday

OAK CREEK, WISC. - The final match of the 2019 regular season might have been just what the doctor ordered as the Madison College men's soccer team snapped a four-game losing streak with a 6-0 rout of in-state rival Milwaukee Area Technical College on Thursday. The scoring burst was led by two-goal efforts from freshmen Omar Torres and Andy Mendez-Maya, and matched a season-high for goals with a 6-0 win earlier in the season against the Stormers. The North Central Community College Conference victory extends the WolfPack's win streak over MATC-Milwaukee to 16 straight, while pushing their lead in the all-time series to 46-15-2.

Madison College jumped on the board immediately when freshman defender/forward Lucas Martin-Heid converted a pass from fellow first year Samuka Toure on the game's first shot attempt. The scoring strike came just 87 seconds into the match, and is the third of the season for the former Madison West High School athlete. The WolfPack made it 3-0 with a pair of goals in rapid succession midway through the first half. Torres, a 5'7" midfielder/forward, netted his first career goal in the 27' on an assist from Mendez-Maya, and then returned the favor by setting up the 5'10" forward for a goal of his own in the 30'.

Still ahead by three in the second half, Madison College created more separation with goals in the 50', 64', and 86'. Sophomore Ben Saric, a product of Butler, Wisconsin, and a transfer from NCAA Division III Edgewood College, registered his second career goal on an unassisted kick. Torres made it a two-goal night when he took a Cole Kleiboer pass and put it past the goalkeeper, while Mendez-Maya matched him with an unassisted goal as the game was winding to a close.

Madison College dominated the action with a 27-2 advantage in total shots and a 14-2 edge in shots on goal. They held Milwaukee Area Technical College (0-13, 0-10) without a shot for the entire second half. Sophomore Saxon LaFlash started in goal and picked up two saves during the first half. He was replaced at halftime by Msughter Abel Dzoho, who kept the shutout intact for 33 minutes before handing the reigns over to freshman Sebastian Varela for the final 12 minutes.

Thirteen different Madison College players were able to attempt a shot, with ten players putting at least one on goal. Torres and Mendez-Maya each posted five points to pace the 'Pack. Saric and Martin-Heid both tallied two points, with Toure and Kleiboer picking up one.

Up Next:

Thanks to Thursday's win, Madison College (6-6-2, 4-5-1) earned the #3 seed in the 2019 NJCAA Region IV Division III Tournament and will host #6-seeded Joliet Junior College (6-8-1, 3-6-1) in a quarterfinal for the season consecutive year. The WolfPack and Wolves played to a 0-0 draw after two overtimes in Madison on August 31 in the N4C opener for both teams, however, the 'Pack took a hard-fought 2-1 win in Joliet on September 25 that capped a season-high five-match win streak. The all-time series stands at 12-9-4 in favor of JJC, though Madison College has earned a win or draw in each of the last five meetings and ten of the last 12 contests. Saturday will mark the fourth postseason match between the two programs, with Joliet Junior College taking two of the three previous. However, Madison College earned a dramatic 2-1 win in come-from-behind fashion in last year's quarterfinals. Kickoff at Irwin A. & Robert D. Goodman Pitch-East is set for 12:00 p.m.
