Season's second game brings season's second scoreless draw for WolfPack

Varela earns first career shutout as Madison, Joliet open N4C play with tie

MADISON, WISC. - Saturday's home and conference opener came and went at Irwin A. & Robert D. Goodman Pitch-East, and after 110 minutes of action, Madison College and Joliet Junior College had begun the North Central Community College Conference schedule with scoreless draw. The tie is the second consecutive for the WolfPack after a 0-0 ending followed two overtimes at Anoka-Ramsey Community College the weekend prior.

Freshman Sebastian Varela made his first collegiate start, and the goalkeeper from Costa Rica recorded four saves as part of his clean sheet. The effort mirrors the shutout recorded by sophomore teammate Saxon LaFlash in the season opener.

Madison College outkicked the Wolves by a 10-9 margin overall, including a 7-4 differential in shots on goal. Neither team was able to generate much offense in the overtime periods.

The result marks the fourth draw in the all-time series between the two programs, and it's the second draw in the last three meetings after a 2-2 result in Madison last fall. Joliet Junior College (1-1-1, 0-0-1) is 12-8-4 in the head-to-head series, though the 'Pack has earned wins in six of the last ten matchups.

Up Next:

Madison College (0-0-2, 0-0-1) will hit the road for a pair of N4C contests, starting with a key game against two-time defending league champion Triton College (3-1, 1-1) on Wednesday, September 4. The teams split their regular season series last year, with each winning on the other's home turf. The Trojans, who are receiving votes in the NJCAA Division III Poll after starting at #8 in the preseason poll, still own a 19-7-1 edge in the all-time series. Game time in River Grove, Illinois, is at 7:00 p.m.
