Late goals extend win streak to five with 2-1 win at Joliet

WolfPack's newest face makes immediate impact

JOLIET, ILL. - Wednesday's North Central Community College Conference men's soccer tilt at Joliet Junior College seemed destined for extra time and a scoreless finish, however, a barrage of goals in the final 20 minutes of regulation sent the Madison College to a 2-1 win that extended their win streak five straight matches. Freshman Andy Mendez-Maya, who joined the team one day prior, made an immediate impact with the game's first goal, while fellow first year Lucas Martin-Heid tallied the game-winner. The WolfPack, who had earned a 0-0 draw with the Wolves earlier in the season, are now 9-12-4 in the head-to-head series and has seven wins and two ties in the last 11 meetings.

The defensive struggles between the two league foes saw a combined seven total shots, with only three from Madison College making their way near the goal. The WolfPack picked up the pressure offensively in the second half, and it paid off with a pair of goals within 12 minutes of each other. Mendez-Maya, a forward from Monona Grove High School, used an assist from midfielder/forward Omar Torres in the 73' to break the scoreless tie with his first collegiate goal. Still a one-goal game in the 84', when first year defender/forward Lucas Martin-Heid scored the eventual game-winner. The former Madison West High School athlete has scored a goal in back-to-back games. It was assisted by Bobby Urey, who now boasts two helpers on the season.

The 2-0 lead did not hold for long, as the shutout bid by sophomore goalkeeper Saxon LaFlash was ended Joliet Junior College (3-4-1, 1-3-1) scored on a header in the 85'. LaFlash, a Madison, Wisconsin, native, was credited with one save, which came during the second half, as the back line in front of him did its job in keeping the Wolves at bay.

Madison College finished with an 11-5 advantage in total shots and a 6-2 lead in shots on goal, as well as a 4-2 edge in corner kicks. The more aggressive WolfPack also forced the Wolves in 14 fouls compared to nine for the visitors.
