Solid back nine rallies Madison College into fifth at first spring event

Jacobson leads WolfPack at Black Hawk Spring Invite

EAST MOLINE, ILL. - The Madison College golf team resumed its 2025-26 season Friday with the Black Hawk Spring Invite at Short Hills Country Club, and used a solid effort on the back nine to propel themselves to a fifth place finish. The WolfPack shot a 319 for their fourth-best team score over 18 holes this season, with freshman Kellan Jacobson leading the charge with a 78. The tournament was originally scheduled as a 36-hole event; however, rain forced a cancelation of Round 1 on Thursday.

During the round, Madison College dropped as low as tied for ninth before surging over the final holes to grab fifth place. Their 319 sat three shots back of Highland Community College in fourth place, and best a pair of teams from Augustana University by one shot as they tied for sixth. Host Black Hawk College won the team title with a 296.

Jacobson, a native of Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin, used a pair of birdies on holes 11 and 17, as well as eight total pars to post his fourth sub-80 round of the season. The six-over-par 78 placed him in a tie for 22nd place overall. The individual champion was Leo Fiscus of Black Hawk College with a three-under 69.

The WolfPack then counted a pair of eight-over 80s and a plus-nine 81. Sophomore Matthew Haggart and freshman Jacob Schmeltzer each had an 80 and tied for 33rd overall. Micah Lenway, a first year player, posted the 81 and tied for 42nd. The team's fifth score belonged to freshman Parker Morrow with a 90 (+18) and a tie for 72nd.

Two additional WolfPack golfers competed as individuals in the event. Freshman Gavin Davidson shot a ten-over 82 to tie for 46th place, and transfer Kaden Zinkle, a DeForest, Wisconsin, native who joined the team over semester break, tied for 61st with an 87 (+15).
