WolfPack holds off Sandburg, close out 21-win regular season

#2 Madison to host #15 McHenry County in Region 4 Quarterfinals

MADISON, WISC. - Despite a fast start, the Madison College women's basketball team held off a late charge by Carl Sandburg College on Saturday to close out the regular season with a narrow 78-75 Region 4 victory inside H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium. The WolfPack's 21st win of the season is their most in a year since the 2015-16 campaign finished 27-4, while also giving the Pack a season sweep over the Chargers. The all-time series still favors Sandburg by a 9-7 margin. Saturday was also Sophomore Day as Madison College recognized Chloey BynumMaia EllisDani Latz, and Keelyn Zwirschitz as the Sophomore Class of 2026.

Carl Sandburg College (21-9) scored the game's first basket; however, the rest of the first quarter belonged to the WolfPack. Seven consecutive points capped by a Serinity Metcalfe three-pointer made it 12-4 before Madison College eventually ended the quarter with a 12-0 surge that include three-pointers from Ava Landrum and Chloey Bynum. The advantage grew as high as 21 twice during the second quarter. Freshman Maddi DeSmet converted a layup to start the period, and then made another bucket with over five minutes left in the half to go ahead 38-17. The Chargers comeback effort then began to take shape as they closed the half with a 14-4 surge to make it a 42-31 differential at halftime.

Sandburg continued to narrow the gap with seven quick points in the third quarter to pull within 42-38, and while the WolfPack held them at bay for most of the quarter, the Chargers eventually pulled even at 53-53 in the final minutes of the quarter. Madison held a 58-55 edge thanks to a Jamera Green triple as fourth quarter began, but a three-pointer by CSC with 6:10 remaining gave the visitors their first lead since the opening basket. The teams traded leads over the remaining minutes until it was tied at 75-75 with one minute to go. A free throw by DeSmet and two from Metcalfe provide a three point lead with 5.3 seconds on the clock. After a timeout, the Chargers made what appeared to be a game-tying three-pointer, but it was after the horn and did not count.

Metcalfe, a freshman guard from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, led the WolfPack with 21 points on 6 of 14 shooting and a 2 for 5 effort beyond the arc. She also sank all seven of her free throw attempts en route to her 23rd game with ten or more points this season, and her 12th reaching the 20-point plateau. Metcalfe added six rebounds and a team-high four assists.

Green, another first year guard from Milwaukee, tallied 11 points as she made three of her four buckets from three-point territory. It's her 12th game with double-digit points and her sixth game with three or more made three-pointers.

Three others also scored in double-figures with Dani Latz, Maia Ellis, and DeSmet each posting ten points. Latz also led the team with nine rebounds, while DeSmet had seven boards and Ellis reeled in six rebounds.

Madison College shot 42% (26-69) overall, 31% (10-32) from long range, and 66% (10-15) at the free throw line. It marked the fourth game this season the WolfPack had made ten or more shots from outside the arc. The Pack held a narrow 32-26 edge in points in the paint and a 27-6 lead in bench scoring for a game that featured seven lead changes and five ties.
