WolfPack rallies, then fades in narrow loss to Rock Valley

Madison College surrenders 12-point led in fourth quarter

MADISON, WISC. - Tuesday night's Region 4 women's basketball showdown between Madison College and Rock Valley College was a game of dramatic runs and swings inside H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium. A huge third quarter rally put the WolfPack up double-digits early in the fourth quarter; however, it was not enough as the Golden Eagles answered with a big fourth quarter and earned a key 72-65 victory decision. Three players scored in double-figures for the Pack, who saw a three-game win streak come to an end, while also falling for the 16th consecutive time to RVC. Rock Valley leads the all-time series 32-18.

Rock Valley College (21-9) jumped out to a 9-2 lead to open the game, but the WolfPack was quick to respond with 7-2 surge that closed the gap to 11-9. The score was eventually tied at 16-16 until the Golden Eagles used a three-pointer to close the first ten minutes with a 20-18 edge. Back-to-back triples by RVC in the second quarter extended their lead to 28-20, and after Madison College pulled to within five at 33-28 after freshman Chloey Bynum buried a three-pointer. The differential was still five following a late Jamera Green layup before Rock Valley scored a layup of their own to make it 39-32 at the break.

The third quarter belonged to the WolfPack, who went on a 16-0 run and held the Golden Eagles without a basket for seven minutes and 45 second as they took a 48-39 lead. Serinity Metcalfe scored six points during the stretch, which was capped by consecutive three-pointers from Green and Ava Landrum. Madison College took a 54-44 advantage into the fourth quarter, which opened with a Maia Ellis bucket to push the differential to a game-high 12 points. Rock Valley College returned the favor with a 13-0 run over the next four minutes to regain the lead at 60-58. A corner three for RVC with 2:55 remaining pushed the visiting team lead to four, and after a pair of Metcalfe free throws trimmed the deficit to 67-65, the WolfPack missed their final three shots over the final 90 seconds as the Golden Eagles scored the game's last five points.

Metcalfe paced the Pack with 19 points, ten of which came during the team's big third quarter. The former Shorewood HS athlete has reached double-figures in scoring in 22 games this season, including 13 in a row. She also added five rebounds, two assists, and a steal.

Fellow first year Maddi DeSmet produced 15 points and seven rebounds, going 4 for 10 overall and a perfect 7 for 7 at the free throw line. The native of Belleville, Wisconsin, contributed two assists, two blocks, and one assist.

Ellis, a sophomore from Verona, Wisconsin, tallied 14 points, a team-high three assists, two rebounds, and one steal. Second year forward Dani Latz led the team with eight boards and matched Ellis' three assists, to go along with four points.

Madison College finished 24 for 60 (40%) from the field, 5 for 19 (26%) from beyond the arc, and 12 of 13 (92%) at the free throw line.
