Schmiesing goes low, Gustafson moves into top 50 during Thursday's Round 3 at NJCAA Championships

Trio of individual players will wrap up strange week Joplin, Missouri with Friday's final round

JOPLIN, MISSO. - Thursday's Round 3 of the 2024 NJCAA Division II Golf Championships marks the first day in which all golfers in the tournament were able to complete 18-holes of play without interruption, and Madison College's Brady Callmer, Peter Gustafson, and Brent Schmiesing took full advantage. The trio were the only members of the team left competing after the NJCAA decided Wednesday to institute a 36-hole cut. All three played their best golf of the week and will try to carry that momentum into Friday's final round at Twin Hills Golf & Country Club.

Round 3: Individual Results

Callmer was the first off the tee for the third round; however, due to some poor communication, was forced to start the round with a two-stroke administrative penalty. The Edgerton, Wisconsin, native followed with a bogey before carding back-to-back birdies on the holes #3 and #4. Callmer added five more bogeys over the next six holes before locking in on the back nine to play one-over golf over the final eight holes with six pars and a birdie. While his 81 (+9) left him with a 241 (+25) total and in a tie for 87th, the sophomore would likely have had his best 18-hole score of the week without the early penalty.

Schmiesing signed off on the lowest round of the week for Madison College, racking up 12 pars and two birdies en route to a two-over-par 74. The second year player opened with five straight pars before recording a birdie on the par 5 #6. Two more pars and a bogey gave Schmiesing an even-par 36 on the front side. Five more pars and a birdie 3 on the par 4 #4 had the former St. Ambrose Academy athlete sitting at one under for the round until a trio of bogeys to end the day resulted in a two-over 74 that tied a career-best. He will sit tied for 53rd with a 233 (+17) total when play continues Friday.

The final WolfPack golfer to take the course Thursday was Gustafson, and the freshman from Monticello, Wisconsin, also came through with his first sub-80 round of the week. A bogey on #1 was quickly followed by a string of five straight pars and his one-and-only birdie of the day with a four on the par 5 #7. One more par and a bogey on #9 gave Gustafson a one-over 37 on his opening nine holes. Seven pars and two bogeys comprised the nine holes coming back in as he finished with a three-over-par 75 to reach 232 (+16) and move inside the top 50 with a tie for 49th.
