GALENA, ILL. - The Clarke University Spring Invitational was played in adverse conditions on Monday at
Galena Golf Club, and the Madison College golf team persevered to finish in fifth place out of ten teams. The WolfPack shot a 327 team total, and we led by a career-best round by first year golfer
Peter Gustafson, who earned his first top ten finish. The wet conditions, combined with additional forecasted precipitation and cold temps, led tournament organizers to cancel the second day of competition, leaving the first day results to stand as final.
Through three rounds of the spring season, Madison College has produced consistent results as they followed up a pair of 325s at the ICC Cougar Preview with the 327 (+39) at Galena GC. University of Dubuque "A" won the team title with an impressive 302 score. The WolfPack was two shots back of North Iowa Area Community College, the only other two-year team in the field.
Gustafson, a native of Monticello, Wisconsin, and a former Madison College men's basketball player, signed off on a six-over-par 78 to join a three-way tie for eighth place. His sub-80 round was the only one of the day for the WolfPack. Bob Ryan of the University of Dubuque was the individual medalist with a one-under 71.
Sophomores
Brent Schmiesing and
Brady Callmer posted 18-hole scores of 81 (+9) and 83 (+11), respectively. Schmiesing was tied for 14th, while Callmer tied for 20th. Freshman
Alex Sutter provided the final counted score of the day with an 85 (+13) to place 28th out of 51 golfers.
Second year player
Tyler Koch rebounded from a rough opening nine to shoot two-over on the final nine for a final total of 87 (+15) to tie for 32nd.Â
