Madison College arrived at the Highland Spring Invitational on Friday ready to defend their 2023 team title at
The Freeport Club. Extremely competitive play resulted in the top five teams being separated by a stroke, and the defending champs finishing in fourth place with a 330 team total. Sophomore
Brady Callmer tied for ninth to match his best finish in a stroke-play event during the 2023-24 season.
Playing through brisk winds, the WolfPack's combined effort left them four shots behind tournament champion Illinois Valley Community College "A" with a 326. Sauk Valley Community College "A" was second by a stroke, and Black Hawk Collge "A" was one shot in front of Madison for third. The host Cougars placed fifth in the eight team field with a 331.
Callmer, an Edgerton, Wisconsin, native, posted an 11-over-par 81 and tied for ninth place individually. Highland's Lane Pierson was the tournament medalist with a six-over 76.
Madison College also counted a pair of 12-over-par 82s from sophomores
Brent Schmiesing and
Braeden Skifton, earning the duo a tie for 11th. Rounding out the WolfPack scoring with an 85 (+15) was first year
Peter Gustafson, who tied for 21st. Freshman
Alex Sutter carded an 86 (+16) and was 25th.Â
Playing as individuals, sophomore
Tyler Koch tied for 14th with an 83 (+13) and freshman
Joe Cranley, a native of Madison, Wisconsin, was 30th out of 52 with an 88 (+18) in his collegiate golf debut.
