JANESVILLE, WISC. - It's been a record-setting start to the 2023-24 season for the Madison College golf team. One week after breaking the school record for 36 holes, the WolfPack did it again with a 594 team score at the two-day Culver's Edgewood College Fall Classic at
Glen Erin Golf Club to finish sixth overall on Friday and Saturday. Freshman
Deegan Riley tied for fourth individually after sitting tied for the lead following the first round. Of the 16 schools represented, Madison College was the only two-year program in the field.
Madison College opened with a their second sub-300 team score of the young season, posting a 295 to sit tied for third place with Lake Forest College and were five shots behind leader St. Olaf College. Second place UW-Stout signed off on a tournament-best 287 on Saturday to finish at 578 and win the event by eight shots over LFC. A 299 for Round 2 by the Pack dropped them back to sixth with the 594 (+26), one shot behind MSOE and three back of fourth-place Univ. of Dubuque. The final tally beats the previous record of 599 set a week earlier at the Highland "36" as the first-ever sub-600 score in program history.
Leading the charge for a second week in a row was
Deegan Riley. The freshman, who grew up in nearby Milton, Wisconsin, posted an eagle on the final hole to shoot a two-under-par 69 to sit in a three-way tie for first place with Austin Gabby of UW-Stout and Carter Ruegsegger from the Univ. of Dubuque after Round 1. On day two, Riley and Gaby each shot two-over 73s to finish tied for 4th overall at 142 (E). Ruegsegger followed up his 69 with a 71 to shoot 140 (-2) and claim medalist honors.
Sophomore
Brady Callmer, who also grew up not far from Glen Erin GC in Edgerton, Wisconsin, posted scores of two-over 73 and five-over 76 for tie for 25th overall with a 149 (+7). First year player
Jacob Brown improved by a stroke from Round 1 to Round 2 with a 76 (+5) and 75 (+4). The native of Racine, Wisconsin, posted a plus-nine 151 and tie for 32nd. Sophomore
Brent Schmiesing accounted for the final score counted towards the team total. The Fitchburg, Wisconsin, product carded a 152 (+10) to place tied for 37th after going 77 (+6) and 75 (+4).
Freshman
Sam Knight shot back-to-back rounds of nine-over-par 80 for a 160 (+18) total that tied him for 68th as the team's fifth score. Fellow first year
Alex Sutter played as an individual and improved the most over the two rounds with an 80 (+9) on Friday and a second round 75 (+4). His final score of 155 (+13) tied him for 57th place.
Sam Godager shot a 12-over-par 83 on Friday as an individual, but was unable to compete Saturday due to health reasons.
Riley, Callmer, Knight, and Sutter all established new career-low rounds.

Madison College will host it's lone home event on Friday, September 8 with the Texas Roadhouse Madison College Invitational. The four-team event will feature a Modified Stableford Scoring System and utilize two-person pairings in a better ball format. Tee times will start at noon at
Door Creek Golf Course in Cottage Grove, Wisconsin. The WolfPack will be hosting Family Day and Sophomore Day festivities postgame.
