Brown leads consistent WolfPack to 4th place in Eau Claire

Freshman posts career-best 36-hole score to earn Top-10 finish

EAU CLAIRE, WISC. - In a tournament field that featured 17 teams from four-year schools and 107 players, including four NCAA Division I golfer, the Madison College golf team impressed with a fourth place finish at the Frank Wrigglesworth Blugold Invitational on Sunday and Monday. Jacob Brown was near the top of the leaderboard entering the final five holes and settled for a tie for seventh place individually to lead the WolfPack, who were the only two-year school at the 36-hole event hosted by UW-Eau Claire at Eau Claire Golf & Country Club. 

Madison College played consistent team golf over the tournament's two days, shooting a 309 on Sunday and a 310 on Monday to total 619 (+51). They moved up the leaderboard from sixth to fourth over the final day, and finished 15 shots back of the host Blugolds B team at 604. UW-Eau Claire A team took the team title at 591.

Brown, a former Union Grove HS athlete, used two birdies and 11 pars to card a three-over-par 74 on the opening 18, and as Monday's round went on, the first year player began climbing the leaderboard. Following a bogey to start play, Brown used three birdies and eight pars to sit one-under-par on the day and was in tied for third place behind two University of Wisconsin players. Unfortunately, Brown played his final five holes in four over and settled for another 74. The 148 (+6) placed him in a four-way tie for seventh and eight shots back of medalist Daniel Aas from UW.

The 36-hole score is a career-best for Brown, besting his 150 mark at the Highland "36" that also gave him a seventh-place finish. He finished the Par 3s with a tournament-best average of 2.75 and was two-under-par on such holes. As a team, the WolfPack matched the tournament champions with a collective 3.38 average and a plus-15 score on all Par 3 holes.

Sophomore Brent Schmiesing also played consistent golf over the two rounds as he shot back-to-back seven-over-par 78s. The Fitchburg, Wisconsin, native turned in three birdies en route to his 156 (+14) that placed him alongside teammate Deegan Riley in a six-way tie for 27th overall. Riley's 156 was the result of a four-shot improvement from Day 1 to Day 2. The native of Milton, Wisconsin, signed off on a nine-over 80 to open the tournament, and returned Monday to shoot five-over 76 that included a pair of birdies.

Second year Brady Callmer accounted for the final score toward the team total with a two-day total of 159 (+17) and a tie for 39th place. Callmer, a product of Edgerton, Wisconsin, was tied for 22 after Sunday thanks to three birdies and nine pars for a plus-six 77. Callmer tallied one more birdie on Monday and posted an 82 (+11).

Freshmen Alex Sutter and Sam Knight played as the team's fifth and as an individual, respectively, and ended the tournament tied for 87th overall with a 173. Sutter, a native of Mt. Horeb, Wisconsin, followed up his Sunday 90 (+19) with a plus-12 83 on Monday to mark the biggest improvement on the team over the two rounds. He posted two birdies on Monday. Knight played more consistently with an 86 (+15) and an 87 (+16) that featured a pair of birdies.

Madison College heads north for its next challenge when they take on a large field of four-year schools at the Frank Wrigglesworth Blugold Invitational on September 17-18. The 36-hole event hosted by UW-Eau Claire will be played at the Eau Claire Golf & Country Club in Altoona, Wisconsin. The action begins at noon on Sunday, followed by a 9:00 a.m. start on Monday.
