COTTAGE GROVE, WISC. - For the second time in three events, the Madison College golf team came out as tournament champs when they claimed the 2023 Texas Roadhouse Madison College Invitational at
Door Creek Golf Course on Friday. The invitational utilized a Modified Stableford Scoring System to award points to a two-person better ball format based on their stroke play score for each hole, and Madison College Navy tied a tournament record with a final score of 88. Freshmen
Jacob Brown and
Deegan Riley led that foursome with a score of 45, falling one point shy of the tournament record for a tandem.
Madison College Navy combined scores of 45 and 43 to reach the top of the leaderboard, giving the WolfPack a win in their home tournament for the first time since 2007. The foursome finished eight points ahead of the College of DuPage Green, while Madison College Grey placed fourth with a team total of 70.
Brown, a native of Racine, Wisconsin, and Riley, a Milton, Wisconsin, native, racked up a 23 points on the front nine, and returned with 22 on the inward nine to sit two points better than their Navy teammates, sophomores
Brady Callmer and
Brent Schmiesing. The Edgerton, Wisconsin, and Fitchburg, Wisconsin, products, respectively, answered an opening nine 19 with a tournament-high 24 on the back nine to reach 43. Brown and Riley are the first Madison College players to earn honors as the top twosome, which also gives Riley his third top-five finish to open the season.
Madison College Grey finished with 70 points as first year players
Henry Pickhardt and
Alex Sutter improved by five points from the front to the back for a 37, which placed them tied for seventh. Teammates and fellow freshmen
Sam Godager and
Sam Knight, who were also teammates with Pickhardt at Madison Memorial HS, carded a 33 and finished tenth.

Madison College heads north for its next challenge when they take on a large field of four-year schools at the Frank Wrigglesworth Blugold Invitational on September 17-18. The 36-hole event hosted by UW-Eau Claire will be played at the Eau Claire Golf & Country Club in Altoona, Wisconsin. The action begins at noon on Sunday, followed by a 9:00 a.m. start on Monday.
