GLEN ELLYN, ILL. - A significant scoring drought to end the first half Tuesday night was the difference in a 71-61 loss for the Madison College women's basketball team against the College of DuPage. The WolfPack are still looking for their first win in North Central Community College Conference and Region 4 Division III play despite 20 points from
Jordanna Davis and another double-double by
Taylor Ripp. The Chaparrals, who also defeated the Pack in Madison, swept the regular season series and have taken three of the last four meetings, however, Madison College still boasts a 28-16 lead all-time.
Both teams held the lead for various stretches of the first quarter, with opened and closed with three-point baskets from Davis. Leading 17-15 entering the second quarter, the WolfPack scored seven of the next nine points to take a 24-17 lead with a
Mikala Williams three-pointer with 7:14 to play. Unfortunately, that would be the last basket Madison College scored in the half, missing their next eight shots and committing six turnovers to allow the College of DuPage (10-12, 5-1) to end the half on a 19-2 surge to take a ten-point lead into halftime.
The WolfPack finally broke through with a Davis layup nearly a minute into the second half. Still down ten midway through the quarter, the visitors engineered a 9-2 burst to pull within 49-46. The Chaps, however, had an answer and finished the final three-plus minutes of the quarter with 11 unanswered point. Aside from a Davis layup inside of four minutes left in the game to cut the differential to eight, COD maintained a double-digit advantage for most of the final ten minutes.
Davis, a 5'7" guard, racked up 20 points off the bench for the sixth time this season, and is now averaging 17.5 points over the last night outings. Four of her games with at least 20 points have occurred in the last seven games. Davis was 9 for 19 overall with a team-high two 3-pointers, to go along with eight rebounds and four steals.
Ripp, a second year guard, engineered her tenth double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds, giving her eight double-doubles in the past 11 games. She finished 5 of 11 with one triple and converted 3 of 4 free throws.
Cora Hansen, a fellow freshman from La Crosse, Wisconsin, with Davis, was a perfect 3 for 3 shooting and hit all four of her free throws to post ten points and three boards.
Madison College was 22 of 59 (37%) overall, including a 2 for 12 (16%) performance in the second quarter. They knocked down 6 of 26 (23%) three-point tries and drained 11 of 14 (78%) from the stripe.Â
