Madison College unable to hold off Joliet JC, fall in overtime

Second half lead fades in low-scoring fourth quarter

MADISON, WISC. - The Madison College women's basketball team played from in front for most of the fourth quarter as they fought for their first win in North Central Community College Conference and Region 4 Division III play, however, visiting Joliet Junior College rallied to force overtime went on to hand the WolfPack a 71-67 setback inside H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium on Thursday night. Freshman Kayla Staveness scored a career-high 20 points in the loss, which gives the Wolves a second consecutive sweep of the regular season series. Madison College still leads the all-time tally, 22-18.

The WolfPack opened the game with tremendous energy and built a 7-2 lead, however, the baskets stopped coming for the final 6:10 of the first quarter as Joliet Junior College (9-18, 4-3) turned a four-point deficit into an 18-11 edge with 11 unanswered points. Staveness sparked the Pack with a three-pointer less than ten seconds into the second quarter, which ended with a 27-27 tie thanks to a Jordanna Davis long range hit with 1:34 remaining.

After outscoring the competition by seven in the second quarter, Madison College carried the momentum into the second half. Twice in the third quarter they led by as much as seven, however, as points came at a premium in the fourth quarter, the Wolves slowly chipped away. The WolfPack momentarily lost the lead at the 5:22 mark, but seemed to be in control with a Kaylee Anzalone triple put them ahead 55-51 with 2:26 remaining. During that final stretch, the Pack missed their only field try, went 1 for 3 at the free throw line, allowed three offensive rebounds, and committed two turnovers, one of which was a steal and a layup with 27 seconds to play that allowed JJC to tie the game.

Both teams found some offensive juice in the overtime, with Madison College converting 3 of 4 three pointers to take a 65-63 lead when Staveness hit her second of the extra session. The Wolves then closed the game with an 8-2 surge.

Staveness, a Rio, Wisconsin, native, buried a career-high five 3-pointers and finished the game 7 of 13 overall and 1 of 2 at the free throw line to reach 20 points. The first year guard leads the team in three-point shooting percentage with a 32.9% effort this season. She also had six rebounds and a team-high four assists as she made her 11th start of the year.

Jordanna Davis and Taylor Ripp also scored in double-figures, and both came up one rebound shy of a double-double. Davis tallied 13 points and nine boards, to go along with three assists and two steals. She converted 6 of 15 shots and hit one 3-pointer. Ripp was 3 for 8 overall with two makes from outside the arc, and nailed 4 of 5 free throws.
