MADISON, WISC. - The Madison College women's basketball team seemed due for win against a North Central Community College Conference and Region 4 opponent, and after five consecutive losses in those situations, they were able to put a mark in the win column Tuesday night with an 80-65 victory over Harper College inside
H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium. Sophomore
Taylor Ripp registered her 11th double-double of the season to lead the WolfPack, who scored 80 points for the second time this season and first since a win at Carl Sandburg College back on November 19. The Pack now leads the all-time series with the Hawks by a 19-3 tally, and the two teams will meet again on February 16 in Illinois.
A high-scoring first quarter saw both teams lead for extended stretches, with Madison College boasting five point lead early and a four-point lead late until Harper College (3-18, 0-6) drained a three-pointer in the final two minutes to make it 22-21. With the game tied at 31-31 midway through the second quarter, the WolfPack found a groove and rattle off a 10-2 surge that started with seven straight points and ended with a
Kayla Staveness hoop-and-foul right before the half.
Three-pointers from
Jordanna Davis and Staveness to open the third quarter ignited another 10-2 push and stretched the advantage to 16. Still ahead by double-figures to start the fourth, the Hawks twice worked the differential to nine in the first three minutes of the quarter. Madison College did not lay off the throttle and would go on to lead by 17 on several occasions before settling for a 15-point victory and their second win in 2023.
Ripp, a native of Lodi, Wisconsin, hit 7 of 13 shots with a three-pointer and 4 of 5 free throws to net 19 points and 15 rebounds. She now boasts five double-doubles in the last seven games. The 15 board tie for her second-highest output of the season for Ripp, who also dished out a team-leading and season-best five assists.
Freshman
Jordanna Davis was point-for-point with Ripp, posting 19 points on 6 of 16 shooting with one hit from long range and a 6 for 10 effort at the free throw line. The La Crosse, Wisconsin, native has scored in double-figures in seven consecutive games and 11 times in the last 13 outings. Davis' statline also included eight rebounds, three assists, and three steals.
Staveness and sophomore
Mikala Williams each had a dozen points for the WolfPack. Staveness made two of her three baskets from beyond the arc and knocked down four free throws, while Williams was a perfect 3 for 3 from distance and hit 3 of 4 free throws. The duo also combined for 12 rebounds and five assists.
Madison College committed ten turnovers, their second-lowest total for a game this season, and generated significant advantages in points off turnovers (27-7), points in the paint (32-20), and second chance points (13-6). The Pack finished the game shooting 38% (27-70) overall, 32% (9-28) from three-point range, and 70% (17-24) at the charity stripe.
