Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Rough shooting night extends WolfPack losing streak

Madison College trailed by one with six minutes to play

JOLIET, ILL. - Despite struggling to put the ball in the basket, the Madison College women's basketball team still had a chance to get a road win in North Central Community College Conference and Region 4 play on Tuesday night, but ultimately suffered their seventh straight loss with a 72-65 decision against Joliet Junior College. The WolfPack shot just 30% for the game, however, freshman Jordanna Davis was still able to produce a career-high 27 points and sophomore Taylor Ripp registered another double-double. The Wolves have won three in a row against the Pack, who still lead the all-time series by a 22-17 margin.

In a highly-competitive game, Madison College was the first to grab a significant lead, going up 14-8 with 4:03 to play in the first quarter after Kayla Staveness drained a three-pointer. Joliet Junior College (6-16, 2-1) answered with a triple of their own and closed the quarter with a 6-2 run to make it a 16-14 deficit for the home team. The second quarter was back-and-forth as the WolfPack and Wolves were tied three times and saw three lead changes until JJC again ended a quarter on a run. The 9-0 burst turned a three-point Madison College lead into a 33-27 differential in favor of Joliet Junior College at the half.

The differential quickly reached double-digits early in the second half, and with 4:28 to play in the third, peaked at a 45-32 advantage for the Wolves. Madison College hung tough as Davis scored seven points in a 10-1 push that trimmed the deficit to four. The fourth quarter opened with JJC ahead by five, and within three minutes the score was narrowed to 54-53 after Davis converted a jumper. Still trailing by a point with six minutes to play, Madison College could not find a way to regain the lead and eventually saw the Wolves rattle off nine consecutive points en route to a 12 points advantage with less than 90 seconds to play. An quick 8-0 run did get the Pack within two possessions before JJC closed the deal at the free throw line.

For the third time in the last four outing, Davis established a new career-high for points, scoring 27 points on 9 of 17 shooting with a three-pointer and an 8 for 9 effort at the free throw line. The guard from La Crosse, Wisconsin, boasts five games with 20 or more points this season and is averaging 20.3 points per game over the last four outings. Davis scored 13 of her 27 in the third quarter alone, and also secured six rebounds in the game.

Ripp's 17 points and 12 rebounds add up to the eighth double-double of the season for the 5'9" guard from Lodi, Wisconsin. Six of those double-doubles have come in the last eight games for Ripp, who finished the game 5 for 12 overall with a three-pointer and a perfect 6 for 6 at the charity stripe.

Freshman Kayla Staveness accounted for half of the team's six made three-pointers en route to a dozen points off the bench. Fellow first year guard Kaylee Anzalone dished out a team-leading five assists, however, she and fellow guard Reyna Knox combined to miss all 18 of their shots, including 13 from long range.

Madison College finished 21-70 for their fifth-lowest shooting percentage on the year. They were 6 of 28 (21%) beyond the arc and 17 of 19 (89%) from the line. The visitors did own an 18-14 edge in points off turnovers, but trailed 15-11 in second chance points and 30-24 in points in the paint.

The WolfPack will host Joliet Junior College on February 2.
