MADISON, WISC. - A closely contested Region 4 women's basketball game through 14 minutes turned in a hurry as the College of Lake County drained a series of long-range shots to pull away from and eventually beat Madison College by a 79-32 final on Wednesday night inside H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium. Sophomore
Kayla Staveness knocked down three triples of her own to score in double-figures, however, it was not enough as the Lancers eventually sank ten shots from beyond the arc. The WolfPack still leads the all-time series by a 7-5 tally despite wins in two meetings this season by CLC.
Madison College was the first team to demonstrate their ability to knock down the three-ball, as Staveness splashed her first three-pointer just over two minutes into the game to give the WolfPack a 4-2 lead. After the College of Lake County answered with a three of their own followed by a layup, Staveness took a
Kaylee Anzalone pass and hit yet another to even the score at 7-7.
The first quarter ended with the Lancers leading 12-11, and both teams struggled to start the second quarter with neither scoring a point until CLC cashed in three-pointer three minutes into the game. Staveness answered right back with her third hit from three-point range, however, the Lancers went on a 15-0 run that included three more treys. Anzalone stopped the run with her only three-point field goal, but after a
Tazhia Aune jumper made it 32-19, CLC closed the half with 11 straight points to own a 43-19 advantage at the break.
The Lancers hot shooting continued into the third quarter as they hit four more three-pointers, put together scoring runs of ten and 11 points, and held the WolfPack to one field goal. The teams played a more competitive, yet low-scoring fourth quarter.
Staveness, who leads the team in scoring at 13.5 points per game, dropped in 15 points on 4 of 10 shooting and made 4 of 6 free throws en route to her fifth straight game in double-figures. The 5'0" guard from Rio, Wisconsin, added three rebounds, a steal, and one block.Â
Freshman
Addyson McHugh played in just her second game of the season, with both coming against the Lancers, and had seven points, seven rebounds, two assists, a steal, and a block. Sophomore
Tazhia Aune sank her first career three-pointer as part of a six-point performance, while the Winona, Minnesota, native led the team with a career-best nine boards. Anzalone dished out a team-leading five assists, to go along with three points.
The College of Lake County (10-0), who got 35 points and eight 3-pointers from Chloe Sisco in the win, also beat the WolfPack by an
82-62 score on November 14.
