WolfPack puts up season-high point total at Lake County

Four score in double-figures led by sophomore tandem

GRAYSLAKE, ILL. - The Madison College women's basketball team took a step forward Tuesday night, scoring a season-high in points in an 82-62 road loss to Region 4 foe College of Lake County. The WolfPack saw four players score in double-figures, with the sophomore guard duo of Kayla Staveness and Kaylee Anzalone leading the way with a career-high point total and a first career double-double, respectively. The setback narrows the all-time series with the Lancers to 7-3.

The WolfPack ran toe-to-toe with the College of Lake County (6-0) for the game's first three quarters. Both teams opened the game with successful three-point tries in their opening possessions, setting Madison College up to make five more shots from beyond the arc than they did in the first three games of the season combined. Down by eight with three-minutes remaining in the opening quarter, the Pack used an 8-1 run to close within 16-15 heading into the second. An early Cayla Golackson jumper gave Madison College a 17-16 lead, which held for a couple minutes before CLC regained the advantage and went on to hold a 35-30 edge at halftime.

A pair of Staveness triples in the first 90 seconds of the third quarter put the WolfPack back in front at 36-35, and ignited a 13-0 surge to give Madison College its largest lead in a game this season at 43-35. The rest of the quarter saw CLC outscore the Pack by a 22-8 margin and own a six-point differential with ten minutes to play. Unfortunately, the offensive juice ran out for Madison College, and the home team won the fourth quarter 25-11 to stay undefeated.

Staveness, a native of Rio, Wisconsin, set career-best marks with seven 3-pointers and 22 points. She connected on 7 of ten shots from long range, and added three rebounds and two assists.

Anzalone, an Elkhorn, Wisconsin, product, filled the stat sheet en route to her first double-double of 14 points and 12 boards. She nearly registered a triple-double with eight assists, and also had four steals. Anzalone made 4 of 12 shots, with all attempts coming from three-point territory, and hit a pair of free throws.

Freshman forwards Mya Baker and Cayla Golackson also reached double-digits with 12 and ten points, respectively. They combined to make 8 of 17 field goal tries and 6 of 8 free throws, to go along with 11 rebounds, five assists, and four blocks as a unit. Baker's dozen points and three assists, and Golackson's three rejections, are all season-highs.

Madison College finished the game shooting 39% (21-53) from the floor, 47% (11-23) from the arc, and 69% (9-13) at the stripe. They also committed a season-low 17 turnovers. The Lancers held a narrow 11-9 advantage in points off turnovers, but were plus-11 in second chance points and plus-18 in points in the paint.

The two teams are slated to play again later this month with a November 29 game in Madison.
