Fast start ends with first win for WolfPack, Whetstone

Victory comes in 100th all-time meeting with in-state foe Western Tech

MADISON, WISC. - Thursday night inside H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium proved to be a historic night for the Madison College women's basketball, who earned their first win of the season with a 55-32 defeat of Western Technical College in the 100th all-time meeting between the two longtime in-state rivals. The victory also marked the first career coaching win for first year head coach Angel Whetstone as she and the WolfPack ended a four-game season-opening losing streak. Madison College now owns a 76-24 lead in head-to-head contests with the Cavaliers.

The WolfPack put together a dominating effort in the first quarter, using three-pointers from sophomores Kaylee Anzalone and Kayla Staveness to surge to a 12-2 lead. The opening ten minutes ended with the home team on top 20-6, before a back-and-forth second quarter won by the Cavaliers closed the differential to 11 at halftime.

Western Tech (0-3) continued to put pressure on the WolfPack in the third quarter, bringing the score to 36-31 with two minutes remaining in the quarter after an 11-5 run. Madison College quickly answered with seven straight points including five by Staveness to regain a double-digit advantage at 43-31 going into the fourth quarter. With the Cavaliers losing players to fouls, the Pack took control defensively and held Western Tech to a single point on a free throw with 2:40 to play that ended a 15-0 surge going back to the third quarter.

Freshman Cayla Golackson put together her third double-double in five games with a career-high 17 points and 12 rebounds. The 6'0" native of Darlington, Wisconsin, made 7 of 13 shots and was 3 for 4 at the free throw line, while also coming up with three steals and three blocks.

Staveness and first year guard Emily Rottier-Douangmala each posted 11 points, with Rottier-Douangmala also earning a first career double-double with ten boards. Staveness made two of her three baskets from beyond the arc and added three free throws, to go along with six rebounds and five assists. Rottier-Douangmala, an Eagle River, Wisconsin, native, went 5 for 8 with a free throw coming off the bench.

For the second consecutive game, Anzalone, a guard from Elkhorn, Wisconsin, toyed with a triple-double as she tallied eight points, nine rebounds, and a career-high 11 assists.

Madison College finished the game shooting 36% (22-61) and was 4 for 20 (20%) from long range, as well as 7 of 12 (58%) at the line. The Cavaliers, who missed their final 17 shots attempts, were 13 for 60 (21%) overall. The WolfPack owned a 30-18 lead in points in the paint and an 18-13 edge in points off turnovers.
