Carl Sanburg too much for WolfPack

Shorthanded Madison College unable to keep up with Chargers

MADISON, WISC. - Coming off their first win of the season, a shorthanded Madison College women's basketball team was upended by Carl Sandburg College in a 92-50 Region 4 setback inside H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium on Saturday. The WolfPack, who had to play a portion of the fourth quarter with just four players, had two players reach double-figure point totals, and another do so in rebounds. The result gives the Chargers a narrow 6-5 lead in the all-time series.

Madison College missed its first seven shots of the game until freshman Cayla Golackson was able to convert a layup off a pass from Kaylee Anzalone. The Chargers, meanwhile, built a 11-point lead throughout the first quarter. A 16-2 run that included 12 straight points for CSC, extended the differential to 34-13 before Kayla Staveness buried a three-pointer with three minutes to play in the half. Carl Sandburg College (5-1) closed the half with an 11-0 push to own a 45-16 lead at the break.

The WolfPack continued to fight hard throughout the second half, scoring 68% of their points for the day. A 9-0 surge midway through the third quarter saw Staveness score five points and Anzalone four. Already down a player in the fourth quarter after Golackson fouled out, Madison College found itself with just four on the floor after freshman guard Mirella Zielke was injured in a midcourt collision. The WolfPack played tough and exchanged baskets witih CSC for most of the period, which finished as the highest scoring ten minutes of the day for the home team.

Staveness led the offensive output for Madison College with 17 points, to go along with three rebounds, three assists, and two steals. The Rio, Wisconsin, native, finished 5 for 15 overall with a pair of three-pointers and was 5 for 6 at the free throw line.

Anzalone, a second year guard from Elkhorn, Wisconsin, posted ten points and a team-high six assists.

Freshman guard Emily Rottier-Douangmala established a career-best with 12 rebounds for her second consecutive game with ten or more boards. And second year guard Tazhia Aune, a Winona, Minnesota, native, that has played for the WolfPack women's soccer team the past two seasons, contributed a season-high nine points on a perfect 4 of 4 shooting with a free throw.
