CHICAGO HEIGHTS, ILL. - The Madison College women's basketball team was unable to climb out of an early deficit Saturday and dropped an 84-41 Region 4 contest at Prairie State College. Sophomore
Kayla Staveness was the lone player to score in double-figures as the WolfPack lost their fourth game in a row. The loss is the first in the head-to-head series with the Pioneers, as the Pack now owns a 2-1 advantage going back to 2021.
Sophomore
Tazhia Aune knocked down a pair of free throws in the first quarter to trim an early deficit to 8-4, however, Prairie State College (5-4) went on a 10-0 run to create a double-digit lead. After Staveness cashed in the first of her three 3-pointers on the day with just over four minutes to play in the quarter, the WolfPack watched PSC close it out with a 9-1 surge to assume a 19 point lead after ten minutes. Madison College was able to generate some additional offense in the second quarter, as well as limit the Pioneers to a quarter-best run of just six points on back-to-back triples. Staveness sank a jumper right before the halftime buzzer to make it 47-19 at the break.
Prairie State College removed all potential for a WolfPack comeback by scoring the first eight points of the half and holding Madison College without a field goal until Staveness hit a three-pointer around the two-minute mark. The differential grew to as much as 45 in the fourth quarter.
Staveness hit three of her six made baskets from beyond the arc and was 2 of 2 at the free throw line to reach 17 points. The returning all-region guard has produced double-digit point totals in six consecutive games.
Fellow second year guard
Kaylee Anzalone tallied eight points, and led the team with six rebounds, six assists, and three steals.
