MADISON, WISC. - Opposing teams this season have found their long-distance shooting stroke against the Madison College women's basketball team, a trend that continued Thursday night inside
H. Douglas Redsten Gymnasium as the Loras College JV made 14 three-pointers en route to an 85-35 defeat of the WolfPack. Sophomore
Kaylee Anzalone was the lone player in double-figures for the Pack, who trail the all-time series with the Duhawks by a 2-5 margin.
Despite falling behind by 11 points in the game's first five minutes, the WolfPack got five consecutive points from Anzalone to make it 19-12 before the Duhawks took a ten-point advantage into the second quarter. Consecutive interior shots from freshman
Cayla Golackson narrowed the differential to 25-17 and forced Loras College into a timeout with 6:45 to play in the half. Unfortunately, Madison College would not score another field goal for the next 13:51 as the Duhawks closed the half with an 18-1 run. A 7 for 9 effort at the free throw line during the third quarter allowed the Pack to put some points on the board until freshman
Addyson McHugh ended the field goal drought with a banked-in jumper as the clock moved inside of three minutes to play. The visitors continued to slowly pull away throughout the remainder of the game.
Anzalone went 2 for 16 with a three-pointer and converted 6 of 8 free throws to tally 11 points. The native of Elkhorn, Wisconsin, also had eight rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
McHugh, a Spring Grove, Minnesota, native who excelled for the Madison College volleyball team during the fall, ripped down a career-best 11 rebounds and scored six points.
The WolfPack established a new season-best for turnovers with just 14, but struggled to find the basket as they made 11 of 55 (20%) shots overall and were 2 for 12 (16%) from beyond the arc. Madison College did make 14 of 22 (63%) free throws.
Loras College became the seventh opponent this season, and the fourth in a row, to make ten or more three-pointers in a game against the WolfPack, with the 14 being a season-high for opposing teams.
