JOLIET, ILL. - A pair of goals in the second half and another shutout performance by the Madison College women's soccer team all added up to a 2-0 win over Joliet Junior College in Wednesday afternoon's North Central Community College Conference and Region 4 match.
Morgan Thompson recorded her second straight shutout in goal, while sophomore
Liz Foye and freshman
Madison Johnson both registered goals in the winning effort. The WolfPack improve their lead in the all-time series to 12-3-1 after playing the Wolves for the first time since the 2019 season.
Madison College came out firing as they put three shots on goal in the match's first three-plus minutes, however, all three were denied by the Joliet Junior College (1-6, 0-2) goalkeeper. When the first half ended, Madison College had placed six of their nine shots on goal. The Wolves countered with four shots on goal and five shots total in the scoreless first 45 minutes.
The second half again started with a barrage of shots towards the JJC goalkeeper, who came up with three more denials. That changed in the 54' when a throw in near midfield went up the far sideline, where Johnson redirected it with a centering pass that found Foye open in front of the net. The midfielder from Poynette, Wisconsin, won the one-on-one battle with the 'keeper to put Madison College on top, and record her second goal of the season and her first game-winner.
Just over 20 minutes later, Johnson found herself in a race with opposing 'keeper after a long pass was sent ahead of her. The forward was able to arrive at the ball first and make an fluid kick on the ball to send it past the charging 'keeper and into the goal. Sophomore
Paris Rose was awarded an assist. Johnson now leads the team with six goals and is tied for tenth in all of NJCAA Division III.
Madison College controlled the ball and tempo for most of the match, owning a 22-9 lead in total shots and a 16-7 differential in shots on goal. Thompson racked up seven saves and has now worked 202 consecutive scoreless minutes in goal.
Johnson and
Lexi Kulow each amassed five total shots, while Johnson and Foye were tied for team-high honors with four shots on goal. Kulow had three shots on goal and Savi Pursely added two.
