WolfPack blank Rock Valley, extend win streak to seven

Thielke becomes fifth player in team history to record 14 or more strikeouts

MADISON, WISC. - Veteran right-hander Jett Thielke put on a masterful performance Saturday in leading the Madison College baseball team to a pair of shutout wins over Region 4 and N4C foe Rock Valley College at Robin Roberts Field. He became the fifth player in program history to fan 14 or more opposing batters as the WolfPack took the opener 5-0, and kept their foot on the gas for a 10-0 win in five innings to close out the sweep. Madison College is 6-0 midway through their 13-game homestand, and they are now 39-22 all-time against the Golden Eagles with wins in four straight games.

Game #1: #1 Madison College 5, Rock Valley College 0

Thielke (5-0) was the key player in the first game, striking out the side in the first inning and the first two batters of the second and third innings. He also struck out all three batters in the fifth and twice recorded four consecutive K's. The 14 total strikeouts is a new career-best for the Green Bay, Wisconsin, native, who is now tied for the third most strikeouts in a single game in team history. The final statline for Thielke included two scattered hits over seven innings drops his team-leading ERA to 1.37, which ranks sixth in the nation. His team-high strikeout total now sits at 42.

Offensively, the WolfPack gave their pitcher a two-run lead in the third inning when a bases-loaded ground ball by Gabe Roessler plated Eduardo Saucedo, and a throwing error allowed Eli Kramer to race around from first to score. Roessler's bat struck again in the fifth as his single to left scored Carter Stebane, and an error in left field plated Kramer. The final Madison College run was tallied in the sixth when Zach Storbakken crossed home on Spencer Bartel's double to left.

The WolfPack generated just six hits from six different players. Roessler finished with a team-high two RBI, and Kramer led the way with two runs scored.

Game #2: #1 Madison College 10, Rock Valley College 0 (5 innings)

The offense struck early in game two, with a run on a wild pitch in the first inning and a five-spot in the second to take a 6-0 advantage. Gabe Roessler continued his clutch hitting with a two-run single in the second, which also featured RBI singles from Zach Storbakken and Jake Fulton. Roessler's line drive single in the third plated Gabe O'Brien for a 7-0 lead, and the team put the finishing touches on the run-ruled win with three more runs in the fourth. With the bases loaded, Eli Kramer, Roessler, and Jurgella each drove in a run, with Roessler capping his career-day with a hit by pitch to tally his sixth RBI of the afternoon.

Roessler, a product of Rockton, Illinois, was 2 for 3 with a run scored and four driven in to match his career best for RBI. Brady Jurgella also posted a pair of hits as part of a two run and one run batted in effort. Gabe O'Brien scored a team-leading three runs on a hit and a walk.

On the mound, Carson Fluno (2-0) whiffed five batters over three innings of shutout baseball with one hit and two walks given up. Kellan Short tossed 1.2 innings in relief and scattered a pair of hits before Chris Byhre entered for the final two batters.
